Brain power

Writer and comedian Rob Newman grew up in the Herts villages of Datchworth, Codicote and Whitwell, went to Cambridge University and says he has been skateboarding for 37 years without getting any better. First gaining attention as the writing partner of David Baddiel, Newman has gone on to a prolific career writing for TV, radio and as a novelist – usually mixing political activism with humour. His new stand-up set, The Brain Show, he looks at the nature of our grey matter – what is love? Can brain scans read out minds? – all while wearing a specially constructed ‘MRI hat’ that will record his real-time brain activity. Old Town Hall, Hemel Hempstead, October 28.

Herts 10K

The largest run of its kind in the county takes off on October 11 with up to 3,000 participants. Now in its 10th year, the Herts 10K is set to take the total amount it has raised for benefiting charity Rennie Grove Hospice Care race past £1.1m. The group provides end-of-life support and care for individuals and their families in west Herts.

Starting and finishing at Rothamsted Research agricultural institute in Harpenden, the event attracts runners of all abilities from beginners to elite athletes, while celebrities including Frank Bruno, Geoff Shreeves, John Motson and Andy Farrell have lent support by starting the race. Fancy dress is welcome.

Festival of Lights

Diwali, or the Festival of Lights, comes to the Parade, Watford, on October 25 with performances, workshops and street food.

The day of celebration is being run for the second year as part of Watford Borough Council’s Big Events series, with a range of free activities taking place throughout the day. Audiences are encouraged to join in the fun, which includes arts and crafts, a night parade and music and dance influenced by the regions of India. Pumpkin picking

It’s pumpkin time at Willows Activity Farm during October half-term, with young visitors invited to pick their very own Halloween vegetable from the pumpkin patch to carve. The event runs from October 24-November 1

with hundreds of fresh, orange pumpkins grown over the summer available. Families can search for the perfect specimen and take it home to cook, while the Carving Cavern gives youngsters the chance to create a pumpkin masterpiece for a daily competition. For children too small to carve, there is the Pumpkin Arts and Crafts marquee.
