This month Harpenden’s Farr Brewery has an exciting crowdfunding campaign to keep community at the heart of its work
Harpenden’s Nick Farr started brewing 15 years ago in his garden shed, creating small batches for parties and friends. They were enthusiastically received, and Farr decided to team up with friend and fellow enthusiast Matt Elvidge, finally establishing Farr Brewery last year – in the process bringing Harpenden its first independent brewery in 96 years.
From the outset, Farr and Elvidge’s Farr ales proved popular, with appearances at local festivals seeing them selling out of more than 1,000 bottles in a weekend.
The pair have developed a range of carefully crafted beers, including the malty and refreshing Our Favourite IPA and the rich, chocolatey Our Most Potent Porter, which has gained praise from leading beer writer Roger Protz. The brewery also offers a bespoke beer creation service for special occasions – one such commission, a ginger beer, was so good it was added it to the range permanently.
With high demand from local stockists including the Beer Shop: St Albans and Rollings Wine Company in Harpenden, the brewery now aims to expand its premises, with plans to allow real ale enthusiasts to visit so they can see the drinks being made – and even brew their own.
Determined to keep enthusiastic locals at the heart of the brewery’s success, the founders have launched a campaign on crowdfunding website Kickstarter to help achieve their aims. Details of how to add support are at farrbrew.com.
Also, fans should keep an eye out for the company’s latest brew, the nattily-titled Hoppenden, a spicy, citrus-packed, hoppy beer that adds another winner to the return of the Harpenden brewing industry.
