How to obtain the ender dragon head in Minecraft

Some Minecraft players may be shocked to discover that they can display the defeated ender dragon's head on their mantle. However, many players may be unaware of how to obtain the head due to its novelty.

The ender dragon head is one of those items that not many players know about. However, once discovered, players are going to pick it up. Keep in mind that the dragon's head does not drop when the dragon is defeated in battle.

Collecting the ender dragon head in Minecraft

A build using the head (Image via imgur)

Mojang had made obtaining the ender dragon head more of a challenge, which is understandable given its high value.

Minecraft players will first have to slay the ender dragon and search for an end city to collect the head. But not every end city will have a dragon's head. It can only be found in end cities that contain end ships.

More specifically, the head will generate on the front of the end ship, making it difficult to obtain quickly. Using potions of slow falling (or extreme caution) is advised when dealing with fall damage.

The ender dragon head can be mined with any tool, including the player's fist. If the head is located over the edge of an end island, Minecraft players are advised to build a platform under the head to avoid falling into the void.

Once the head is collected, players can either wear it as a helmet or use it as decoration. Most Minecraft players tend to go with the latter option.

A quick two-minute YouTube video above provides a visual reference for those who prefer understanding those steps that way.

The hardest part about obtaining the dragon head is locating an end city with an end ship. The ender dragon fight is not dangerous. However, players are highly recommended to bring feather falling boots or potions of slow falling to defend against the dragon's wing attack.

TIP: If you don't find an End Ship in your End City, don't worry, just look for another End City. There is more than one End City in your Minecraft world.

3. Build a Platform under the Dragon Head

Next, you will need to build a platform under the dragon head.

In this example, we've placed end stone under the dragon head. You will want to place some type of block under the dragon head so that when you remove the dragon head, it doesn't fall into the void.

4. Break the Dragon Head

The game control to break the dragon head depends on the version of Minecraft:

  • For Java Edition (PC/Mac), left click and hold on the dragon head.
  • For Pocket Edition (PE), you tap and hold on the dragon head.
  • For Xbox 360 and Xbox One, press and hold the RT button on the Xbox controller.
  • For PS3 and PS4, press and hold the R2 button on the PS controller.
  • For Wii U, press and hold the ZR button on the gamepad.
  • For Nintendo Switch, press and hold the ZR button on the controller.

How To Get DRAGON HEAD In MINECRAFT

How do you get a dragon head in Minecraft?

You can find Dragon Heads on End Ships.

How to locate an End Ship

After you kill the ender dragon, you might spot two clusters of bedrock with a portal in the center off the edge of the island- these lead to the outer islands of the End. The portals look like this:

It's extremely hard to get in them, as you can see the gap for the portal is only one block tall (use of an ender pearl is recommended!). If you can't, the outer islands are ~1000 meters away from the central island, so lots of stacks of some easy-to-obtain block like dirt or cobblestone could get you there too. Also, you can make a flying machine., make it go outwards from the islands, and AFK for a few minutes. The outer islands look like this:

enter image description here

As you can see, there are many dips in between the islands, you'll need a lot of blocks. Eventually, you'll come across this:

enter image description here

which is an End City. Up in the air, you might see an end ship:

On the very front, you'll see a Dragon Head...Feather Falling is extremely recommended!

Thank you for the suggestions, commenters!

Minecraft dragon head

A head is a decorative block. There are six types of heads: player, zombie, skeleton, wither skeleton, creeper, and dragon.

Obtaining[]

Breaking[]

A mob head can be broken using anything and drops itself when broken.

If a head is pushed by a piston or comes in contact with water or lava, it breaks off as an item.

When destroyed by an explosion, the block always drops as an item.

Natural generation[]

Dragon heads generate on end ships found in end cities.

Mob loot[]

A wither skeleton has a 2.5% chance of dropping a wither skeleton skull when killed by a player or tamed wolf. The chance is increased by 1% per level of Looting, for a maximum of 5.5% with Looting III.

In Bedrock Edition, the chance is increased by 2% per level of Looting, for a maximum of 8.5% with Looting III.

Skeleton, wither skeleton, zombie, and creeper heads are also always dropped by the respective mob if it dies due to a charged creeper's explosion. If an ender dragon or the player is killed by a charged creeper, it does not drop its head.

Usage[]

Decoration[]

Mob heads can be oriented in 16 different directions on top of a block, and 4 directions on the sides of blocks, similar to signs. They cannot be placed on top of each other, but they don't require a supporting block.

The dragon head opens and closes its mouth repeatedly like the ender dragon when placed and powered by redstone. The same animation occurs when worn by a (horizontally) moving player, zombie, skeleton, or armor stand (note: the animation does not play if the tag is set to 1)

Wearing[]

The player can wear heads, similarly to pumpkins or helmets. This overlays the second layer of the player's skin.

Disguise[]

Wearing the corresponding mob head reduces the detection range for skeletons (but not wither skeletons), creepers, and zombies to 50% of the normal range. This is similar to (and stacks with) the reductions in detection range from sneaking and from the Invisibility status effect.

In Bedrock Edition, wearing any mob head or carved pumpkin makes the player invisible to other players on a locator map.

Withers[]

Wither build configuration

Withers can be created by placing soul sand or soul soil in a T shape, and putting 3 wither skeleton skulls on top of the three upper blocks. The last block placed must be one of the three wither skeleton skulls. A dispenser can also create a wither, by placing the final skull onto soul sand directly in front of and below it.

Dispensers[]

A dispenser can equip a mob head on a player, mob, or armor stand with an empty helmet slot, within the block the dispenser is facing.

Dispenser can also complete the construction of a wither.

Crafting ingredient[]

Enchantments[]

Mob heads can receive the following enchantments, but only through an anvil.

Player skins[]

Human heads have an extra usage for map makers, they can be given NBT data so that they appear with the skin of any Minecraft account. This means if a player knows that a specific account has a head that is desired to display, the NBT data can be edited to make it appear.

The command to give the player a head skinned as another player is . Commonly, this kind of head is called player head.

Another command to give the player a head with another player's skin is . SkinURL is a string encoded in Base64 containing the URL of the player's skin.[1] A player head saves the skin of the player from the time it was created, meaning if the player changes their skin, the head still displays the original texture.[2] This kind of head is generally called a custom head.

Marc's Head Format[]

Marc Watson created a number of accounts with specific skins so map makers could use common heads without the risk of someone changing their skins.[3] Nowadays, since heads do not update the skin if a player changes their skin, this is not something map-makers need to worry about, though these skins are still useful. These accounts have names in the format , for example is the name of a Minecraft user with a zombie pigman head. MHF stands for "Marc's Head Format".[4] There are also a few blocks and "bonus" heads, for more variety. These player heads have not been updated in compliance with the Texture Update, and are outdated.

Because these are names of player accounts, these heads are obtained or placed using the tag, for instance: .

The Dragon Head is a decorative head block, which can be obtained in the End.

Source

Unlike other mob heads, this head is not obtained by simply killing a mob by a Charged Creeper's explosion and picking up the head. Added as part of 1.9, this head is obtainable by reaching the End ship high above the End city. This area is only accessible after defeating the Ender Dragon and stepping through an End gateway or by constructing a ~1000 block long bridge heading away from the End to the islands. Like any other heads, it is also obtainable via the item menu in Creative.

Uses

The main use of the dragon head is for decoration, but it can also be worn in the helmet slot. When moving around while doing so, its jaws move. This is the same when activated by Redstone.

Trivia

  • The dragon head is the only head block with movable parts.
  • When wearing a dragon head, the head is twice the size of a player's head, creating a comical appearance.
  • This is one of only two types of heads that is not obtained by killing a type of mob.
  • This is the only mob head that is naturally generated in a world.
