McAfee Safe Connect is a US-based VPN service with Windows, iOS, and Android apps. It's a fast VPN but it suffers from weak security, an invasive logging policy and lacks customer support. It also doesn't unblock streaming services like Netflix. Bottom line, avoid using McAfee VPN.

McAfee VPN is bad for privacy

Logging Policy & Jurisdiction

1.0/10

We dissect the logging and privacy policies of every VPN. A VPN should never log:

  • Your real IP address
  • Connection timestamps
  • DNS requests

A base of operations outside of 14-Eyes or EU jurisdiction is preferable.

McAfee’s logging policy is one of the worst we’ve ever seen. The VPN logs personally identifiable information, such as your IP address and the websites you visit. Ultimately, when you use McAfee Safe Connect, you’re not protecting your privacy — you’re handing it over to McAfee.

McAfee collects the following information:

  • Your IP address
  • URL and domain names in your browsing history
  • Your purchase history, your hobbies and interests, your photographs, and your biometric data
  • Device information, such as the device’s battery level, location information, hardware type, and ISP
  • Information about other devices connected to your network

Here is the information as it appears in the McAfee privacy policy:

Excerpt of McAfee VPN's logging policy

Excerpt from McAfee Safe Connect Privacy Policy.

McAfee retains this information indefinitely, only removing it in the event of an account deletion. Even then, the data is still kept for 30 days.

McAfee also provides this information to other companies owned by McAfee, third-party advertisers, and “service providers who perform services for us.”

Peculiarly, McAfee Safe Connect shares its privacy policy with the broader McAfee cybersecurity product and the policy does not mention the Safe Connect VPN anywhere.

After we contacted McAfee, a representative did indeed confirm that Safe Connect is governed by the same rules and standards as all other McAfee products.

McAfee claims that this information is required “to help protect” users and “to run [McAfee’s] business”.

This is simply a lie. There are an abundance of VPN services who protect their users and run their business without engaging in such intrusive data collection.

US Ownership is problematic

McAfee Safe Connect is owned by McAfee LLC, the cyber security juggernaut. McAfee LLC also owns TunnelBear VPN (see our review), which it acquired in 2018.

Like its parent company, McAfee Safe Connect is based in the US, within Silicon Valley. As such, McAfee’s jurisdiction really could not be much worse. The US is a downright awful location to base a VPN service.

The US is part of the Five-Eyes intelligence alliance, meaning it shares surveillance data with the UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

On top of this, McAfee is subject to the intrusive legal policies of the US, such as the infamous PRISM surveillance program, which allows the US government to surveil online communications from US-based technology companies.

More worrying, though, is the Stored Communications Act (SCA). This law grants the US government the ability to seize a VPN user’s information if that information has been retained.

Excerpt from The Stored Communications Act 2010

Excerpt from The Stored Communications Act 2010.

This is particularly concerning with Safe Connect, as McAfee logs almost everything.

Moreover, McAfee’s privacy policy explicitly states that it will supply information to any legal, governmental, or judicial authority if it is ever requested.

In summary, McAfee Safe Connect VPN is bad for user privacy. To see the benefits of a trusted no-logs VPN, head over to our review of Private Internet Access.

Fast speeds across the board

Speed & Reliability

8.9/10

Speed ratings are calculated using upload speeds, download speeds, and ping (latency).

We test average speeds regularly using a dedicated 100Mbps connection in London, UK. Local download speed is considered the most important factor.

Speed is the only area that McAfee Safe Connect excels. In our tests, McAfee VPN was very fast, with speeds of 88Mbps when connected to a nearby server. International performance was less impressive, but our download speed never dropped below 35Mbps.

McAfee Safe Connect delivers fast speeds because it uses Catapult Hydra, Hotspot Shield’s proprietary protocol. We cover more about Catapult Hydra in our 2021 Hotspot Shield review.

Hotspot Shield licenses the use of the protocol to other VPN services, including Kaspersky Secure Connection and Bitdefender VPN.

To test McAfee VPN’s speed, we connected to a nearby VPN server from our base in London.

Here are our full local speed test results:

  • Download Speed: 99Mbps
  • Upload Speed: 98Mbps
  • Ping: 4ms
  • Download Speed: 88Mbps
  • Upload Speed: 90Mbps
  • Ping: 7ms

Download speed loss when McAfee Safe Connect is running: 11%

As you can see, we saw just a 11% drop in download speed and an 8.73% drop in upload speed. This is impressive and matches the results from some top VPN services.

International Speed Test Results

Using our 100Mbps fiber optic connection, you can view our speed test results connecting from the UK to various McAfee Safe Connect servers below:

  • USA:
    • Download: 62Mbps
    • Upload: 46Mbps
  • Germany:
    • Download: 84Mbps
    • Upload: 85Mbps
  • Singapore:
    • Download: 44Mbps
    • Upload: 28Mbps
  • Australia:
    • Download: 38Mbps
    • Upload: 30Mbps

Speeds remained impressive on international connections. We saw a download speed drop of 37% when connected to an East Coast US server and just a 13% drop when connecting to the Netherlands.

Doesn’t work with Netflix and other streaming services

Streaming

0.8/10

Streaming is rated by the number of different services unlocked, how many regional libraries are viewable, and how consistently the VPN can access them.

Netflix, BBC iPlayer, HBO Max, DAZN, and Amazon Prime Video are all tested on a weekly basis.

McAfee Safe Connect is a terrible VPN for streaming. The VPN was unable to stream any of the services we tested, including Netflix, BBC iPlayer, Disney+, and Hulu.

McAfee admits its poor streaming ability, stating “Netflix and Hulu […] might not work correctly over the secure VPN connection.”

More worryingly, however, McAfee’s customer service team were frequently surprised when we asked about Safe Connect’s streaming capabilities. They even asked why we thought using a VPN would unblock geo-restricted content.

As the company sees it, which has been reinforced in our testing, McAfee Safe Connect is simply not a VPN meant for streaming.

For improved streaming, see our lists of top-rated Netflix VPNs, BBC iPlayer VPNs, and general VPNs for streaming.

Overpriced for what you get

Price & Value for Money

5.0/10

Price & Value for Money receives a rating, but is not factored into our Overall Rating. We believe the reader should decide what is or isn’t a reasonable price.

A good rating here isn’t just based on how cheap the VPN is, but for the value it offers overall.

Given its relative lack of quality, Safe Connect VPN is not cheap. The McAfee Safe Connect monthly package costs $7.99, or you can lower the cost to $2.92 if you pay for a year upfront. For this price, there are far better alternative products available.

Here are the two different subscriptions available for McAfee Safe Connect:

  1. Monthly

    US$7.99/mo

    Billed $7.99 every month
  2. 12 months

    US$2.92/mo

    Billed $34.99 every 12 months
    Save 64%

All plans have 30-day money-back guarantee

As well as the discount, the annual package also has the additional bonus of being eligible for a 30-day money back guarantee, whereas the monthly plan is not.

These prices are fine, but certainly not great. For just 50¢ extra per month, you are able to get access to our third favorite VPN provider — IPVanish. You can read more about how IPVanish provides a much better bang for your buck in our full IPVanish review.

However, if you are interested in the broader McAfee product range, you can save a bit of money with McAfee Total Protection Ultimate. This bundle works out to be just $5 per month and includes access to Safe Connect, McAfee antivirus, McAfee’s password manager, and McAfee’s web protection software.

Payment & Refund Options

Here’s a full list of payment methods that NordVPN accepts:

McAfee Safe Connect Free

If you just want to test out McAfee Safe Connect, there is a decent free plan available. You’re not obliged to enter any email address or payment information to get access to the free tier — ensuring that you don’t get surprised by any unwanted outgoings on your next bank statement.

The McAfee support pages claim that the free plan only allows a VPN connection to your nearest server, but this is not true. We were able to connect to all 23 of Safe Connect’s servers, ranging from France to Singapore.

McAfee also state that the support options of live chat and telephone are exclusive to paid subscribers, but we also found this to be false.

However, the free tier does only allow a restrictive 250MB of data to be consumed each month.

This bandwidth limit is fine if you just want a quick feel of whether or not Safe Connect is the right VPN for you, but it won’t get you much further than that.

If you want to see what free VPN providers we do recommend, which combine good logging policies with adequate data allowances, why not check our rundown of the best free VPNs for 2021.

Tiny server network spanning just 23 countries

Server Locations

7.2/10

The global spread and coverage of the VPN server network is the most important factor here.

We also consider the number of city-level servers, plus how many IP addresses are maintained.

This rating does not directly contribute to the Overall Rating, but instead makes up a portion of the Security & Features rating.

McAfee Safe Connect’s number of server locations is one of the most limited around, with a total of just 23 countries. This slim coverage is even more disappointing as Safe Connect does not allow you to connect to city-level servers, a feature that we have come to expect from good VPN services.

Globe with a blue flag
23Countries

23Cities
Image of a pink marker
Undisclosed number ofIP Addresses

Though small in size, McAfee Safe Connect has servers in the most popular countries.

Coverage is particularly concentrated in Western Europe and North America, with the US, Canada, the UK, France, Spain, and Germany all included.

List of McAfee VPN server locations

Asia and Oceania are poorly represented, with just 5 server locations between them. Australia, India, Hong Kong, Japan, and Singapore count one server each.

Coverage is truly abysmal in other areas, with Brazil being the only South American option and no servers in Africa.

McAfee refused to inform us about how many individual VPN servers and IP addresses there are and whether these servers are physical or virtual.

We were repeatedly told that server information was “information that cannot be disclosed to customers.”

We were not given a reason to explain this, which is particularly frustrating given how common it is for VPN services to definitively state their server and IP address count.

If your home country is not covered, or if you’re a globetrotter that needs the most exhaustive server coverage, check out our HideMyAss (HMA VPN) review. HMA VPN has servers in over 190 countries.

Unsafe for torrenting

Torrenting

0.0/10

We calculate the average download bitrate of every VPN using a bespoke torrenting setup.

Testing also factors in the percentage of servers which permit P2P, plus useful features like port forwarding.

We do not recommend McAfee Safe Connect for torrenting and P2P activity. The VPN has an invasive logging policy and doesn't include a kill switch. As a result, it can't be trusted to hide your torrenting downloads from third parties.

Without using a kill switch, you risk revealing your true IP address if your VPN connection drops for any reason. Alongside this, the sinister amount of information that McAfee Safe Connect logs could be effortlessly used to personally identify you.

This is a shame, as our tests showed torrenting to be allowed on all of Safe Connect’s servers and its fast upload speeds allowed for speedy P2P activity.

But torrenters should absolutely pick a no-logs VPN provider that also provides a kill switch instead.

To find out which VPN services we do recommend for P2P activity, check out our rundown of the best VPNs for torrenting.

These providers combine the most watertight privacy policies with blazing fast speeds and no torrenting restrictions.

No kill switch and weak security features

Security & Features

3.6/10

Top-rated VPNs offer OpenVPN or WireGuard protocols, AES-256 encryption, and a functional kill switch. We also consider additional security features and the global spread of VPN servers.

McAfee Safe Connect provides only basic encryption and security. It didn't leak our IP or DNS address, and it secures traffic using AES-256. However, none of its apps include a kill switch, and it doesn't offer any advanced tools, such as split tunneling and manual port selection.

Protocols
  1. Proprietary
Encryption
  1. AES-256
Security
  1. None
Advanced features
  1. None

McAfee Safe Connect runs on the somewhat secretive Catapult Hydra VPN protocol, making it a bit of a gamble when it comes to your online security.

The choice of Catapult Hydra concerns us for a few reasons. Firstly, McAfee does not state this is its chosen protocol anywhere. When we asked, multiple support agents stated this was simply “information that cannot be disclosed to customers.”

Virtually all other VPN providers definitively state their chosen VPN protocol, including those who also use Catapult Hydra, such as Hotspot Shield and Kaspersky Secure Connection.

As a result, McAfee’s secrecy makes us immediately suspicious, and for good reason.

In 2018, a major security flaw in Catapult Hydra was discovered by independent security researcher, Paulos Yibelo. This flaw meant that user data, such as a user’s country and the name of their WiFi network, could be accessed by a third party.

In conjunction with other publicly available data, this information could then be used to locate and personally identify a user.

A fix for the security flaw was quickly issued, but the fact this initially slipped through the net points to the larger problem of Catapult Hydra. It’s still not transparent enough.

By contrast, our preferred VPN protocol, OpenVPN, has been around since 2001 — having much longer to prove itself and to refine its methods through its open-source community.

Our biggest concern, however, is that McAfee Safe Connect lacks a kill switch on all platforms.

A kill switch is a feature that blocks your web traffic in the case of a dropped VPN connection. This means that your IP address could be exposed if this happens when running Safe Connect, jeopardizing your online privacy.

There are no advanced security features like split tunneling or manual port selection, either.

At least, McAfee Safe Connect utilizes the AES-256 cipher. Most major VPN services favor this method of encryption, which has yet to be broken.

Safe Connect also passed our IP and DNS leak tests. This is shown in the image below, where we are connecting to an East Coast US server from our base in London.

Screenshot showing McAfee VPN does not leak IP addresses

Screenshot from Browserleaks.com showing a US IP address, with no IP or DNS leaks from our base in London, UK.

However, despite the use of AES-256 and IP and DNS leak protection being encouraging, this still falls far short of redeeming the shortcomings of Safe Connect’s encryption and security quality.

Simply, we cannot trust McAfee Safe Connect to keep your online activity anonymous and neither should you.

Limited device compatibility

Platforms & Devices

A quality VPN should maintain functional, fully-featured applications and extensions for as many platforms and devices as possible.

This does not directly contribute to the Overall Rating, but instead makes up a portion of the Ease of Use rating.

Safe Connect VPN only supports Windows, iOS, and Android. There is no MacOS app, which is very surprising, and no Fire TV nor Linux apps, either. McAfee Safe Connect supports a very limited range of platforms and devices compared to other paid VPN services.

Apps

McAfee Safe Connect has apps for the following platforms:

  1. Windows Logo
  2. iOS Logo
  3. Android Logo

There is no Smart DNS tool, and it’s impossible to set up Safe Connect on your home router. As a result, there are no workarounds for devices that don’t support VPN applications, like games consoles.

The service doesn’t offer any VPN browser extensions, either. If this is a problem, see our lists of the best Chrome VPN extensions or the top-rated Firefox VPN add-ons.

Frankly, though, for a paid VPN service to have such minimal platform and device support in 2021 is really poor.

McAfee Safe Connect allows up to five simultaneous connections, with the large caveat that you can only register a maximum of five devices to your account.

Most other paid VPN services let you install the VPN on an unlimited amount of devices. Instead, with McAfee VPN, you’ll have to be extremely selective when registering your devices.

Simple to set up and use but not enough configuration

Ease of Use

7.1/10

This rating mainly consists of the intuitiveness of setup and everyday use.

Device or platform compatibility and customization options are also a factor.

As a whole, McAfee's VPN apps are user-friendly and are accessible for beginners. The apps are minimal, so you won't be able to configure many advanced settings. That said, McAfee Safe Connect is a dependable choice if you’re looking to simply connect and forget.

How to Install & Set Up McAfee Safe Connect

  • Download the relevant software from the website.

  • Follow the simple installation prompts.

  • Wait for the installation process to complete. Then, click 'Finish'.

  • Once the app has installed, login with your McAfee account details.

  • The main screen is really simple, with a big connect button, and the server list in the top right.

  • The VPN server location list is available in the top right of the app.

  • Clicking the hamburger menu icon on the top left of the app allows you to access your account, your settings, and help.

  • The settings for McAfee Safe Connect can be accessed through the app's sidebar. Frustratingly, it lacks any configurability.

Downloading the McAfee Safe Connect app on mobile is simple — just search for it in your device’s app store.

For Windows, the process is a bit different. Head to the direct Windows download link and the download should start automatically.

From there, the installation process is as simple as following the on-screen steps.

Once installed, the McAfee Safe Connect app is appealing and a pleasure to use, despite its plainness.

We particularly liked the app’s tutorial screen which nicely explains and locates key features of the VPN.

The McAfee Safe Connect introduction screen

The main screen is minimal, including a connect button and server list. This screen displays some useful information at a glance, such as connection time, data transfer and your WiFi/network connection.

Settings can be found on the app’s sidebar, but the options are far too limited for our liking.

You can choose your language preference and whether or not the app should run on startup, but that’s it. More experienced users will miss being able to fiddle with configurable options.

If you want a range of configurable options and advanced features, we recommend using more advanced VPNs like AirVPN (read our expert review).

Won’t work in censored regions like China

Bypassing Censorship

2.5/10

Our remote-access server in Shanghai, China routinely tests if a VPN can beat restrictions and access a free, open internet. Obfuscation technologies and nearby servers are also a contributing factor.

This rating does not directly contribute to the Overall Rating, but instead makes up a portion of the Security & Features rating.

McAfee Safe Connect cannot be used in heavily censored regions, such as China. Unlike many VPNs, it does not have any obfuscation tools or VPN protocols designed to beat censorship.

In order to bypass the so-called Great Firewall of China, VPNs need to employ clever obfuscation tools which mask VPN data and make it appear as regular HTTPS web traffic.

Only the very best VPN providers manage to consistently circumvent state-enforced restrictions, so it’s little surprise that McAfee Safe Connect falls short here.

McAfee Safe Connect lacks any of the required obfuscation tools and will therefore fail to bypass China’s, or any other regions’, censorship laws.

Even if that weren’t the case, Safe Connect’s overly intrusive logging policy means it would be a simply terrible VPN for use in highly-censored regions.

By logging your IP address, your device’s MAC address, your GPS location, and your biometric information, McAfee makes it as simple as possible for any government to identify you.

If you want to know what VPNs work in high-censorship countries, see our article on the best VPNs for bypassing censorship.

Live support is not very helpful

Customer Support

4.0/10

This rating is based on our assessment of each VPN’s:

  • Email support
  • Live chat support
  • Online resources

Not every VPN offers all of these, and they often vary in quality and response time.

McAfee VPN's customer support is really poor. Although it's available 24/7, its support agents are not well-informed about VPN-related issues. Its knowledge base is extremely limited, too, with only a handful of articles being relevant to Safe Connect.

24/7 Live chat supportYes
EmailYes
Online ResourcesYes

McAfee shares one knowledge base for its entire suite of products, but of 360 total articles, only eight of them mention Safe Connect.

Like with the rest of Safe Connect, it proves here again to be the neglected child of McAfee.

Safe Connect does have a phone number that you can contact, but we were told on two separate occasions that we would be called back and these calls never came.

Frustratingly, the live chat disconnects multiple times during a conversation. It will reconnect, most of the time, but we completely lost contact a few times.

McAfee Safe Connect shares a support infrastructure with the broader McAfee product line and it’s clear the agents have not been adequately trained to deal with the VPN product.

The support agents were unable to answer routine questions, like whether Safe Connect could be used to bypass geo-restricted content and how many total VPN servers there are.

Screenshot showing McAfee's live chat support

On top of this, Safe Connect seems stifled by the legacy baggage of McAfee. For example, you are forced to provide your full name, email address, and phone number before initiating a live chat.

For a product that exists to protect your personal information, the requirement to provide information that can be used to personally identify you is self-defeating.

The Safe Connect support agents are also extremely heavy-handed in remotely taking control of your device. For example, we were asked to allow remote access after asking a simple question about access to US Netflix.

All of this is extremely off-putting and unnecessary. Especially for privacy-sensitive users, the thought of handing over your phone number and allowing remote access for basic issues might be a bit too much to swallow.

Avoid using McAfee VPN

The Bottom Line

We do not recommend using McAfee Safe Connect. Despite its big name and brand appeal, you should avoid using McAfee’s VPN.

McAfee Safe Connect is a speedy VPN aimed at newbies who want a hassle-free way of hiding their IP address. Sadly, though, even for VPN amateurs, Safe Connect fails to provide the bare minimum to make it a good VPN choice.

Most worrying is McAfee’s logging policy. The data McAfee retains means you could end up handing over more information than you’re protecting with Safe Connect.

The logging policy is exacerbated by McAfee’s base in the US — one of the most privacy-unfriendly jurisdictions on the planet.

So long as McAfee allows its VPN product to stagnate, you should avoid using Safe Connect.

McAfee Safe Connect review: A VPN with only average online privacy features

McAfee isn’t a new name for people familiar with antivirus programs. But an antimalware maker might not succeed well with cybersecurity on the whole. At least, McAfee Safe Connect VPN demonstrates the same by offering a brief feature list.

Can be bundled with other security products of McAfee

Intuitive and appealing and VPN apps

There was a time when VPNs were primarily considered a tool dedicated to the CyberSec community. However, as internet technology took over the corporate world and the businesses started aggressive data monetization strategies, even the non-CyberSec people started using VPNs as routine.

This increase in the use of VPNs eventually attracted many corporate firms to invest in this venture. And that’s where things went wrong.

We now have so many VPNs in the market that choosing the right VPN has become difficult. Eventually, people often fell for the non-worthy VPNs and risk their online privacy.

McAfee Safe Connect VPN is one such product that users should be wary of!

When the security firm McAfee jumped on the bandwagon after achieving success with antivirus solutions, it came into existence. However, like many others, McAfee couldn’t do justice with their VPN, eventually turning it into something we would avoid recommending.

But what’s exactly the problem with that, I hear you ask.

Let’s delve into the details of what this service has for you in this extensive McAfee Safe Connect review.

McAfee Safe Connect overview

McAfee VPN review

McAfee Safe Connect VPN, as the name already hints, is a product of the popular brand McAfee. The brand’s parent firm McAfee Corp. specializes as a tech giant producing numerous business and security-driven software solutions.

For regular users, McAfee stands as a name for the years-old McAfee antivirus program. And, generally, McAfee holds a good reputation for it.

Given the success in ensuring cybersecurity against malware threats, the firm eventually stepped into the realm of VPN with McAfee Safe Connect VPN. Nonetheless, for privacy-savvy users, using this VPN might not be a great idea.

The critical thing that backs this statement is that, just like the firm itself, the VPN is based in the United States. Though it’s nothing unique for a tech firm to base there, a VPN service shouldn’t really exist in this territory, considering that the US is a major member of the Five Eyes alliance.

Naturally, this makes the Safe Connect VPN a service with obvious data-logging practices. Yet, for those who are comfortable sharing their data with surveillance authorities, this might not be a problem.

However, a feature-wise comparison of McAfee Safe Connect VPN with the leading VPNs shows many downsides of the former. So, you might have to think twice before opting for this service.

Server locations and coverage

Safe Connect VPN does not offer a vast server network across many countries.

In fact, its coverage is far narrower than CyberGhost VPN, NordVPN, ExpressVPN, and Surfshark VPN that offer 6700+, 5400+, 3000+ and 3200+ servers across 88, 59, 94, and 65 countries, respectively.

Safe Connect VPN merely offers 23 different locations to the users – something far lesser than today’s leading VPNs. Moreover, the VPN doesn’t exhibit any location diversity either. Below we list the countries McAfee Safe Connect VPN offers servers from:

  • Argentina
  • Australia
  • Brazil
  • Canada
  • Denmark
  • Finland
  • France
  • Germany
  • India
  • Ireland
  • Italy

Did you find any African country on the list? You can’t, because McAfee’s VPN offers no servers from there. You can see the list revolves around Europe and the Americas only. They even missed many important locations from the largest continent, Asia. Previously, they did offer a Hong Kong server location. But they later removed it in July 2020.

Regarding the number of servers, McAfee hasn’t precisely disclosed them anywhere on their website (at least, we couldn’t find it out).

However, according to other media sources and the app interface that simply shows a list of 23 different countries to connect to, with no choice of selecting cities nor exhibiting any doubling of locations, it seems that the VPN offers 23 servers only.

If that’s really the case, you can clearly observe that subscribing to this VPN might not facilitate you for routine activities. However, if you merely need a VPN for occasional use, then you might try this one.

Nonetheless, if you’re planning to try the VPN’s free version, then you won’t really find the opportunity to choose a location. That’s because McAfee Safe Connect VPN offers a single “fastest location” to the free users only.

VPN connection protocols

Here again, McAfee shows suspicious behavior. Unlike the majority of VPNs that clearly explain all the VPN connection protocols they support, we couldn’t find this information anywhere on McAfee’s website. Nor did their chat support proved fruitful.

The only thing we could observe during our tests was the VPN’s requirement for the TAP driver, which shows that Safe Connect at least supports the OpenVPN protocol. Possibly, this is the only VPN protocol they offer.

Besides, during our research to write this unbiased review of McAfee VPN for you, we noted that McAfee VPN relies on the Catapult Hydra protocol. This is the same protocol that powers Hotspot Shield and some other firms.

Here again, we advise you to practice caution because Catapult Hydra (by AnchorFree), despite being fast enough, isn’t a robust VPN protocol. Hence, this can allow governments in repressive countries to detect VPN use by the public.

Encryption

Perhaps, this is what McAfee is proud of for their VPN because they clearly state details about it on their website. (Or, maybe they had to mention it otherwise the VPN would appear dubious.)

As they claim, McAfee Safe Connect VPN comes with the ‘bank-grade’ AES 256-bit encryption. (For those who feel confused, bank-grade is the same as military-grade encryption, particularly when the precise encryption protocol is AES-256-bit.)

Given the trust of other VPNs too on the AES 256-bit encryption, rest assured that McAfee VPN won’t expose your data online.

Kill-Switch

Like other major features, McAfee Safe Connect VPN lags behind others regarding kill switch as well.

As we always emphasize, a kill switch is important to protect your online privacy. Otherwise, the sole purpose of using a VPN goes in vain the moment the software suffers a connection drop.

Therefore, while working on this McAfee Safe Connect review, we strived hard to find something about the kill switch.

But, after extensive research, we deduce that this VPN lacks this key feature entirely for the phone VPN apps. Whereas, for the VPN client for Windows, we couldn’t find any precise information about the kill switch.

For this reason, we defiantly advise you to avoid using this VPN if you want complete privacy.

IP and DNS leak protection

Although, the absence of a kill switch is clear evidence of poor IP leak protection with this VPN.

But what about the IP and DNS leaks during active VPN sessions, I hear you ask.

Well, just as for all other key features, we couldn’t find the precise information about DNS leaks anywhere on McAfee’s website.

Thus, we went ahead to test the VPN for it ourselves.

Gladly, the results weren’t disappointing. After establishing the connection, we performed IP and DNS leak tests and found no leak of our actual IP address.

It’s good to see McAfee taking care of this vital privacy aspect with their VPN. Nonetheless, this protection does not substitute for the absence of a kill switch in any sense.

Data-logging policy

The last thing we deem necessary to label a VPN service as good is a no-logs policy. In other words, we believe a good VPN must not and should not log any sort of users’ data under any circumstances.

While ExpressVPN, NordVPN, and Surfshark never upset us, Safe Connect VPN, however, brought a big disappointment.

At first, McAfee’s website had no specific Privacy Policy for its VPN. This indirectly shows that its general Privacy Policy holds true for all products.

If that is so, then be ready to use this VPN at the cost of your data (in addition to your money).

We went through McAfee’s Privacy Policy to see what type of information do they collect via their products. This is how their Privacy Policy summarizes what they collect about you.

“We automatically collect information about your interactions with the Services as well as devices on which the Services are installed. In some cases, we automatically collect information about other devices connected to the same network as the device on which the Services are installed.”

In simple words, if you have a McAfee product running on any one of your devices, then you automatically risk the security of all other devices connected to the same network. Even if you have no McAfee services installed on those devices, McAfee would still track them.

While this policy is already aggressively intrusive, it gets worst when it applies to a VPN product.

As a standard, a VPN is your trusted companion to keep all your online information secret and limited to you only. That’s why the leading VPNs like ExpressVPN or NordVPN run RAM servers to ensure nothing gets logged with them for long.

So, if a VPN starts logging your data, it’s a big privacy concern as the service provider can then share your data with anyone at any time.

To further worsen the matter, McAfee’s base location plays a key role: the United States – a key member of 5-Eyes.

It means all your data with this VPN will land at the hands of governments, surveillance agencies, and other online tracking authorities.

If you reside in Europe, you may get partial protection due to GDPR. Still, the service might compel you to agree to its intrusive policies to continue using the service.

While their Privacy Policy clearly shows the parent company’s focus on your data, we appreciate the transparency they have maintained.

If you still proceed to use their products even after reading their Privacy Policy, you can never accuse them of any privacy violations.

McAfee Safe Connect VPN key features

After going through the basic features of this VPN, we thought to dive deeper and see if McAfee has anything attractive for its users. If not, the VPN wouldn’t have existed at all.

However, given that it still survives garnering an impressive customer base, the VPN certainly exists because of the following special features.

Although, you might not find this list as exhaustive as that of ExpressVPN or Surfshark VPN. Still, we deemed it necessary to mention them in this honest Safe Connect review.

No data-capping (premium)

If you wonder what’s so special here, don’t be. McAfee Safe Connect typically comes with a capped data of 250 MB for free users.

So, to lure customers towards paid subscription, McAfee boasts uncapped usage as a special feature.

Adblocking

Now, this is something desirable for a tool like VPN. With Safe Connect VPN, you don’t have to bear with annoying ads. McAfee ensures that your VPN experience remains ad-free, even with the free Android and iOS versions.

(Perhaps, that’s the reason why they had to cap data for free subscribers.)

McAfee Safe Connect VPN user experience

Until this point, we have assessed McAfee Safe Connect VPN for what we consider must-haves for a good VPN.

Unfortunately, McAfee didn’t satisfy us at many points.

But is it really that worthless? You might wonder if it’s easy to use for non-techie users. So here we quickly elaborate on our experience with this VPN.

Website interface

The first thing that reflects a service’s care for its customers, according to us, is the user-friendliness of the website.

We aren’t commenting on the technical aspects of their website here. But, as a user, it was difficult for us to find relevant information about their VPN on the website.

After landing on the relevant page, all we could view was the pricing plans of the VPN, use cases, server locations, some necessary information about VPNs in general, and a few basic cybersecurity tips. (We liked the tips part, though.)

However, when we wanted to know more about the total number of servers, exact cities, IP addresses, and the typical features offered by this VPN, we couldn’t find the information.

Moreover, their website hasn’t listed any separate Privacy Policy, FAQs, and support articles for the VPN. One has to browse through the main sections to find answers to questions, many of which still remain unanswered.

In this situation, we fear that users may ignorantly fall for them without knowing how their privacy goes in jeopardy after signing-up for McAfee Safe Connect.

App interface

After the website, the next thing that should necessarily be user-friendly is the respective VPN app.

Well, here, McAfee delivers impressive results as it brings an intuitive app interface for the users.

On our Windows PC, the app exhibited a minimalist yet impressive and user-friendly interface. It also displayed a tutorial to help newbie VPN users.

Besides, the main screen displays everything necessary for the users, such as the server list, connect button, and network details.

For seconds, you’ll find a few configuration options revolving around the app startup and language preference. If you’re an avid VPN user with highly customized settings, then Safe Connect might be the wrong choice for you.

Nonetheless, this app requires minimal user input for the new users as it handles the more technical issues itself.

Simultaneous device connections

As regards the number of simultaneous devices the VPN can support, Safe Connect clearly wins over many VPNs.

Precisely, it supports one device connection for free subscribers – something that is pretty obvious. However, for premium users, the service allows up to 5 simultaneous connections on a single account, just like ExpressVPN.

It means that subscribing to McAfee will help you if you wish to run an easy-to-use VPN across all your gadgets.

Although McAfee Safe Connect VPN doesn’t support today’s significant platforms, it does offer compatibility for the more used ones. Hence, you’ll find its dedicated Windows, iOS, and Android VPN apps to run across your systems.

However, if you rely more on Mac, you might have to look up some other VPN. You can even choose some of the best ones through this list of the best VPN providers.

Similarly, Safe Connect VPN does not offer support for Linux, Amazon Fire devices, and gaming consoles. Moreover, the service also offers no VPN client for routers, so you can’t really protect the non-compatible devices ever with this VPN.

Speed test

Like always, speed lags are something that can distract even the most die-hard VPN fans. Certainly, we already anticipate a good VPN to slow down the overall connection speed as it encrypts data.

But more speed lags will ruin your entire browsing experience.

So, after facing disappointments in numerous steps, we weren’t much positive for this VPN to pass our speed tests.

However, Safe Connect doesn’t only pass our test, rather also impressed it with astonishing speed.

Precisely, from our location (the UK), connecting to the local Safe Connect server merely caused a 4 -7% speed drop. Since we had a good base speed, this slight lag didn’t have any noticeable impact on our browsing experience.

After that, we moved on to test the distant servers (though the choice was very limited for us). While we expected to experience at least a 30% drop, McAfee’s VPN amused us with a mere 10% drop only as we connected to an Asian server.

Isn’t that impressive?

Thanks to its underlying Catapult Hydra protocol designed to provide fast speed connectivity with encryption.

It means that, regardless of your existing location, you’ll always find this VPN fast enough for various activities.

Download and installation

Just as its app interface, the overall McAfee Safe Connect download and installation process is also pretty easy for everyone.

You don’t have to learn any technical details to learn how to set up the VPN on your device. Rather, all you need is to head to the Safe Connect website and create an account.

If you’re planning to go for a full paid subscription, you can register yourself as you choose a subscription plan.

Or, if you wish to test this VPN’s functionality without paying or to use a VPN temporarily, you may instead go for the McAfee Safe Connect VPN free download here.

These direct websites links are for downloading the Windows VPN client. If you wish to install the VPN on your smartphone, you can simply lookup for the McAfee Safe Connect VPN app on the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store.

On smartphones, setting up the VPN app is way easier as it requires little to no instructions from you besides device access permissions.

Whereas on your Pc, you can run the downloaded setup file to start the installation process. Keep moving on as you follow the on-screen instructions to complete the setup.

Once you’re done with McAfee Safe Connect VPN download and installation, you’re all set to start using the VPN.

Customer support

McAfee’s website boasts 24/7/365 customer support for the users via various channels.

Precisely, you can either visit the ‘Customer Support’ center to find relevant articles answering your various queries.

Or, you can talk to a support agent via their live chat feature. Though, your first interaction would be with a bot that is pretty intelligent to bring instant answers to your queries.

While all of this sounds great, our actual experience with customer support wasn’t impressive. We tried a couple of times to connect to an agent as we strived to find answers to our queries regarding kill-switch, number of servers, and other issues. But, every attempt of ours remained unsuccessful as we merely got a bot to connect to.

Moreover, the other factor that prevented us from making more attempts to connect to an agent was the intrusive information requirements. For instance, the service asks you to provide your full name, phone number, and email address to begin a live chat.

We already highlighted the aggressive data collection practices by McAfee earlier. So, after encountering these information requirements, we had to step back. Though, we are still not sure how much data they would have collected through our testing devices.

We then proceeded to browse their support articles.

Again, it was challenging to find the desired information. That’s because we could find very few articles related to Safe Connect VPN lost in the bulk of articles aimed at other McAfee products.

Does McAfee Safe Connect VPN unblock streaming sites?

Now that you know what McAfee’s VPN has for you, you might wonder if this VPN really works, don’t you?

Don’t worry; we also thought the same. So, we further evaluated the VPN to unblock streaming websites before coming up with this McAfee Safe Connect VPN 2021 review.

Although, McAfee claims for its VPN on its website to successfully unblock popular streaming platforms.

However, following our failure to unblock Netflix USA and Hulu, we browsed through their support articles to seek help. Eventually, we found several articles that share some troubleshooting tips users can apply if they get an error during streaming. Nonetheless, those tips didn’t prove fruitful during our testing.

It means that this VPN might not facilitate you in unblocking geo-restricted streaming libraries when you are abroad.

While McAfee doesn’t openly disclose the reason behind the VPN detection, as per our understanding, it’s because of the underlying Catapult Hydra protocol.

Although this protocol provides fast speed, it isn’t as robust as other protocols. Thus, it remains vulnerable to detection by aggressive tracking services like Netflix.

If you wish to enjoy unrestricted access to your favorite streaming library anywhere, try ExpressVPN instead.

Is McAfee Safe Connect VPN safe for torrenting?

Our direct answer in a word is ‘no’!

“But why?” We hear you ask.

Well, the prime issue with torrenting is that it has a gray reputation. The authorities, on a state-basis or country-basis, often aggressively block torrenting. Some regions even consider torrenting as illegal due to the potential piracy and copyright violation issues executed through this utility.

Therefore, if you’re torrenting in a repressive region, you need a VPN that ensures your online activities’ utmost security and anonymity. You need a bold no-logs, highly secure, and customer-oriented platform.

Unfortunately, McAfee Safe Connect VPN does not fit into the category of safe VPNs. While it does protect you from malicious online tracking, it doesn’t secure you from government surveillance.

In fact, they log your data, and they have publicly disclosed about the potential sharing of logs with governments as and when required legally.

It means if you perform any activity while using this VPN that violates the regulations of your country, this VPN won’t protect you. Rather it will easily share your data with the government as and when asked. Eventually, you’ll have to face legal consequences for the violations.

How about using Safe Connect VPN in China?

Though, you might have deduced the right answer to this question by now. In case you haven’t, then let us confirm through this McAfee Safe Connect review that this service won’t work in China.

And we like how they have transparently admitted this problem.

As we explained above, Safe Connect VPN depends on the Catapult Hydra protocol that is very easy to detect.

Hence, in repressive countries like China, the authorities can easily spot the VPN traffic and can block the service.

Unfortunately, McAfee VPN is so fragile that it often fails in many other moderately-repressive countries as well.

As elaborated on their website, this VPN may not adequately serve the users in the following countries.

  • Pakistan
  • China
  • Russia
  • Kazakhstan
  • Burma
  • Turkey
  • Venezuela
  • Belarus
  • Iraq
  • Oman
  • Iran
  • Uganda
  • Syria
  • North Korea
  • Turkmenistan

The list looks exhaustive, isn’t it?

But, if you wonder which VPN would let you browse the internet anonymously in China, then don’t worry. Check out our detailed list of the best VPNs that work seamlessly well in China.

Safe Connect VPN subscription plans

After going through all the details in this McAfee Safe Connect review, you might wonder what makes this VPN popular despite numerous lags.

Perhaps, the most lucrative thing in this VPN is its freemium model that attracts non-paying users.

The McAfee Safe Connect VPN free version supports one device connection with 250 MB of capped data. However, it lacks servers’ choice and connects the users to the fastest server available nearest to the geolocation.

The premium version, however, offers more features, such as 5 simultaneous with unlimited data and the complete server list.

McAfee VPN pricing

Users can subscribe to the paid version by choosing the monthly plan available for an affordable fee of $7.99/month. Or, they can also subscribe to the more extended 1-year plan that roughly costs you $20 a year.

Conclusion

We now come to the end of this detailed McAfee Safe Connect review.

As you can see, it’s a very basic VPN with no fancy features to protect your online privacy. Plus, their extensive data-logging policies add more to the downsides of the VPN.

Therefore, the more privacy-savvy users may not find this VPN much useful, especially when better choices are available at affordable costs.

However, this VPN is still useful for those who just need something to protect their online privacy from malicious tracking and advertising. McAfee Safe Connect VPN not only protects you from hackers but also warrants an ad-free experience even with the free version.

So, if you’re not doing anything grey and don’t worry about government surveillance, then this VPN is an excellent alternative to perform routine activities for free.

McAfee Safe Connect VPN uses bank-grade AES 256-bit encryption to keep your browsing information and online habits private at home and on-the-go. While convenient, connecting to public Wi-Fi can expose your sensitive data to prying eyes such as your physical location, banking account credentials and credit card information.

It's legal to use a VPN in most countries, including the U.S., however:

  • Anything that's illegal without a VPN remains illegal when using one (e.g. torrenting copyrighted material).
  • VPNs are banned by a few countries including China, Russia, Iraq and North Korea.

What is VPN

Why use a VPN?

Using a VPN is one way you can protect your privacy online and keep your information protected from hackers, internet service providers, and other 3rd parties.

A VPN allows user to securely browse and access personal data through public networks. Much like a firewall protects the data on your computer, a VPN protects your activity by encrypting (or scrambling) your data when you connect to the internet from a remote or public location. A VPN allows you to mask your location, IP address, and online activity from cybercriminals.

Benefits of a VPN

Some of the most important benefits of a VPN are increased security on public connections and increased protection of your private information. A VPN can help keep your sensitive personal information including financial data, passwords, and browsing history hidden from both hackers and websites. When you use a VPN, your data is effectively scrambled and hidden to anyone outside your VPN tunnel, thus making your private information difficult to collect. This not only helps to make it difficult for cybercriminals to read your data, but also keeps companies from trying to share your browsing habits and information with 3rd parties.

Download VPN for Phone

If you want to download a VPN to your smartphone, you can do so from the Google Play store and the App Store, which are available for Android and Apple devices respectively. For the more comprehensive solution, it's recommended that you download McAfee Mobile Security, which will allow you to use the VPN while also being able to protect your data and prevent intrusions from various cyber threats. If you decide to go with McAfee Safe Connect, you'll be provided with a great solution if you're solely looking for a VPN and don't require additional security for your phone.

VPN necessary

Do I need a VPN?

If you like to take your laptop or mobile device to the library or cafe, you probably connect through public Wi-Fi. The problem is that many free, public Wi-Fi networks are not secured. This means that a hacker could easily intercept the information you send over the public network, including your passwords and banking information. But, if you use a personal VPN, you can connect securely any time you are away from home.

VPN while travelling

Do I need a VPN while traveling?

Traveling often means being surrounded by (and connecting to) unfamiliar Wi-Fi networks. This vulnerability makes it especially important to have a smart security solution in place for all your devices. If you tend to spend a lot of time browsing or doing work from your device while you travel, make sure to download security applications (including a VPN) that protect your devices.

If you’re traveling to cities where pickpocketing is common (or if you’re merely forgetful), many of the security apps also offer anti-theft protection. This feature allows the user to back up, lock, and wipe the device remotely just in case your phone gets swiped.

How do I choose a VPN provider?

When selecting a VPN provider, think about the following criteria:

  • Ease of use—You want secure technology, without having to be a tech whiz to use it. That’s why you should look for a product that is easy to implement, like the McAfee®  Safe Connect VPN app, which allows you to easily and securely connect, ensuring that your passwords and data stay private when using public networks.

  • Robust security—Look for a VPN with a bank-grade encryption. This way the bad guys can’t read or access the data you send through the network.

  • Access to virtual locations—This feature helps you gain even more anonymity online by using a VPN server that shows a different location than your point of access. For example, you may be getting online in the United States, but your VPN server may show you are connected in France.

VPN Locations Available

One of the most important factors to consider when selecting a VPN service is accessibility to certain server locations. The location that you choose depends entirely on your needs. For instance, one location may be able to provide you with better internet speeds than another location, which makes for a stress-free user experience. On the other hand, choosing another location may allow you to access geo-restricted content like local news.

The location that you select can also play a part in being able to browse the internet securely. When you want to have the ideal browsing experience, the exact server location that you choose can make a difference in how satisfied you are with the overall experience. By choosing a McAfee VPN, you will have the ability to choose an IP address in nearly two dozen different countries.

How else can I protect myself from hackers?

Using a VPN is a great start, but it isn’t the only way to protect yourself from hackers online. Try these top tips to help keep your data and devices secure:

  • Pick password-protected Wi-Fi. When connecting to Wi-Fi, choose networks that have WPA or WP2 passwords for protected access. If the network doesn’t require a password, the connection could be open to hackers and other threats.

  • Look for the lock icon. Make sure that the web pages you visit are “HTTPS” encrypted whenever possible and contain a lock icon in the address bar. Do this by looking at the beginning of the URL you are accessing – if the URL starts with “HTTP”, log out – particularly if you’re doing something sensitive.

  • Watch for warning signs. SSL and TLS warnings are the messages that pop up in your browser when you come across an insecure connection – and it’s likely that you’ve clicked through the notification without a second thought. Take a moment to think about what you’re agreeing to before moving past the notifications next time because it could mean you’re putting your devices and data in danger.

  • Don’t set it and forget it. Don’t set your device to automatically connect to Wi-Fi networks, especially public ones. Rather, make sure your laptops, tablets or smartphones will “forget” certain networks when you disconnect, and that they’ll only reconnect when you choose to do so manually.

By following these top tips, and using a trusted VPN provider, you’ll be well on your way to securing your data and devices from hackers, ISPs and other 3rd parties looking to profit from your lack of privacy.

Unlike home Wi-Fi, the vast majority of public Wi-Fi hotspots aren’t password-protected & don't encrypt the data being transmitted. When you connect to a hotspot, your online activities – from social media content to bank account credentials – may become vulnerable to hackers. With McAfee Safe Connect Secure VPN, your internet privacy & Wi-Fi security are protected.

Issues with Apple CarPlay

The only real issue I have ever had with this subscription is that it will disconnect me from Apple CarPlay regardless of which of our vehicles I’m driving. The reason I suspect it is the VPN is because when I get disconnected from CarPlay, the VPN is rapidly switching on and off until I turn it off and reconnect to CarPlay. Not as common, but sometimes opening apps will take a very long time to open. I have yet to find any solid correlation when this happens.

Thanks for reaching out to us. Some apps or streaming services might not work correctly over the secure VPN connection due to the proxy IP address. We recommend turning off VPN for these types of apps (Open Safe Connect>Tap on 3 lines at the top right corner>then select App-Level protection). If you need help or more clarification, please contact our support team at service.mcafee.com/contact. We are more than happy to assist.

Safe Connect Mobile

Why I rate you low, is due to your system of sending me emails to subscribe, when I already HAVE a valid subscription running. That confused my 84-year-old brain. I wondered why you had triggered your emails. I found, when I went to your website, that you sell a number of products and I could not locate what more McAfee could provide me. I believe I left a message there.

I received more emails. Today I used Safari to access the site. There I was to put in email and password. From memory I tried various ones from my past years. The last ones worked. Yes, I have a subscription. Yes I can add a second device. (Kinda odd it was not listed, for I had its icon on my device, already. I wonder if my internet company had caused me to turn off the VPN … didn’t I get locked out from a few links I’d tried to access?)

Anyway, now you see problems we BOTH are creating. Yours: too many emails, and insufficient cross-referencing of email addresses, payment names, or live contracts ignored, etc. Mine: not remembering what email address I used, not remembering just what trade-mark name I purchased when your emails “switch/bait” or morph, and being too old to recall months after purchase that probably turned off the VPN and was not prompted by software to consider turning it back on.

Thanks for reaching out. The email notification might be related to an older McAfee subscription. To help you get this sorted, we need a few details about your McAfee account. Please contact our support team at service.mcafee.com/contact. We will work together to resolve your concerns as soon as possible.

McAfee charging me twice to use their product

First I installed McAfee safe connect on my PC $7.99 a month for up to 5 devices. Downloaded the McAfee safe connect on my IPhone and used my user name and password I created for my PC everything worked great. The iPhone app updated and after the update the app wouldn't except my user name and password and was charged another $7.99 for the month on my iPhone. I now have it on my PC and Phone and I'm being charged 7.99 a month for each one. I'll be removing it from my phone after this review.

After contacting McAfee customer service we got to the bottom of the problem and all is good so I changed my rating from 1 star to 5 star as I never had a problem with the product per se as it's easy to use and works as advertised.

Hi, thanks a lot for the revised rating. We're glad that your problems were resolved. Please feel free to get in touch with us at service.mcafee.com if you need anything! We're happy to help.

Now discussing:

What is McAfee Safe Connect?

McAfee Safe Connect is a Virtual Private Network (VPN) product that allows you to:
  • Protect your privacy and identity
  • Access blocked websites
  • Browse the internet anonymously
Safe Connect connects you to the internet through a VPN to enable these security features on your Windows, Android, and iOS devices.

All network data that travels through a VPN is encrypted, and Safe Connect uses AES 256-bit encryption by default. This encryption protects your data by preventing anyone else from reading it.

Click to expand each of these frequently asked questions about Safe Connect:

VPNs, such as Safe Connect, do not make you anonymous on the internet, but they can greatly increase your privacy. VPNs are commonly used by businesses to protect sensitive data and allow their employees to securely connect to their work networks, from home or from the road. Personal VPNs, such as Safe Connect, are becoming increasingly popular with home users.

You can use a VPN when you need privacy and security, while connecting to the internet:
  • Privacy: The VPN can replace the IP address of your device with a different IP address, effectively hiding your location.
  • Security: The VPN can encrypt your data as it is sent over the internet. This encryption makes sure that third parties are unable to read your communications.
Safe Connect changes the IP address of your device so that you appear to be accessing the internet from somewhere other than your physical location. For example, even though you are using your device in the U.S. state of Texas, Safe Connect can make it look as though you are connecting from somewhere else, such as London in the U.K.
