Gotrax XR Elite - Design
You can look at the XR Elite and consider it a facelift of sorts, kind of like what a car gets as it reaches the mid-point of its career on the market.
Just like its earlier peers, the XR Elite has a front-wheel-mounted electric motor rated at 300 watts.
That’s the same amount of power offered by the XR Ultra, but 50 watts on top of the entry-level XR.
The battery pack sits inside the deck, which for the XR Elite is wider, at 6.6 inches. What’s more, Gotrax covered the deck in a layer of anti-slip rubber-like material just like it did with the Ultra, supposedly to offer extra grip and at the same time, more peace of mind when riding the electric scooter.
Appearance-wise, the color scheme doesn’t seem that different from the Ultra and the basic XR. Matte black is still king, but this time adorned with a white patch on the handle body (featuring the Gotrax lettering) and piano black bits and bobs on the steering wheel, around the speedometer, where the user is expected to interact more often with the e-scooter.
Last but not least, Gotrax tweaked the headlight which we’re told is now brighter. For additional visibility, the Gotrax XR Elite gets a LED taillight as well as six reflectors scattered around the ‘chassis.’
Gotrax XR Elite - Comfort and practicality
Although it doesn’t ride on a suspension setup per se, the XR Elite is fitted with 8.5-inch air-filled tires which are bound to soak some of the vibrations produced when travelling over bumpy surfaces.
A disadvantage here, however, lies in the scooter’s weight. At 31.88 pounds, it is 5.43 pounds heavier than the XR and XR Ultra, which makes it even harder to carry through a flight of stairs or lift it and deposit it inside your car’s trunk, for example. Elsewhere, the handles look hand-friendly but they don’t fold, so storage might be tricky if you don’t get a lot of space at your disposal.
Gotrax XR Elite - Performance
Keep in mind that this is marketed as a commuting electric scooter, so it’s important to examine and judge it in the right context. Which is daily trips to and from the office that may or may not include swapping means of public transportation like buses or trains.
With that in mind, the manufacturer-stated 18-mile range sounds good and was possible thanks to a larger battery - the Xr Ultra uses an LG-sourced 36V/7 Ah battery pack that’s good for 16 miles of range, while the Elite’s is a 36V/7.8 Ah unit adding 2.6 extra miles of range for a total of 18.6 miles - on paper, at least.
The in-wheel electric motor should be up to the task in pretty much every urban setting you might plan on testing it, except perhaps steep inclines that will put a dent in range and top speed (Gotrax says there shouldn’t be any problems on up to 15-degree-incline hills).
Speaking of top speed, the company claims the XR Elite can go as fast as 15.5 mph (25 kph), which is good considering your typical urban setting with curbs, buildings, cars parked on the street and other obstacles like trash cans, poles and whatnot won’t let you open it up and enjoy the thrills of speed. Unless, of course, you decide to take it to a park at an hour with low pedestrian traffic.
Stopping power comes from a dual-brake setup that mixes disc braking on the rear wheel and anti-lock electrical braking at the front wheel, via the electric motor. That’s a nice thing to have since it confers extra balance and control even during those situations when you have to stop fast to avoid injuring others or yourself.
Gotrax XR Elite - Price
Gotrax’s website lists the XR Elite with a price of $399.99. Keep in mind that at the time of writing, the e-scooter was sold out on the maker’s website, but that should change once Gotrax brings in a new batch of Xr Elites. You can also get the scooter on Amazon, but like we said, it was unavailable at the time of writing.

Gotrax GXL V2 Overview
Today we are looking at another great electric scooter, the Gotrax GXL V2; delivered from a young US-based company called Gotrax Galaxy. Not long ago reviewed the Gotrax Glider, an electric scooter aimed towards kids and teenagers; now we quickly have to move on to our Gotrax GXL V2 review, a scooter targeted at adults and designed for commuting. Gotrax certainly have been busy!
Similarly to the Gotrax Glider, the GXL V2 is a reasonably priced, high-quality electric scooter. The powerful 250W hub motor allows reaching 25 km/h (15.5 m/h) maximum speed with this fairly lightweight 12 kg (26.5 lbs) adult electric scooter.
Bigger & Better battery on a budget
A bigger 36V Lithium-ion battery allows riding up to 20 km (12.5 miles) with a full charge. Which should be enough for most of your commute inside or outside the city. If that’s not enough you can recharge Gotrax GXL V2 in 4-5 hours back to 100%.
We were very pleasantly surprised by the design of Gotrax GXL V2. It looks smooth and stylish. Nothing wobbles or feels untightened. The big 8.5-inch pneumatic air tires allow for a more stable ride and rear disk brake provides a reliable stop.
Having no Bluetooth and smartphone app connectivity is a minor disadvantage to some, but we think this is offset by the attractive price and other quality specifications. Top commuter scooters like Xiaomi are priced around a quarter more than the GXL V2 with just a few additional features, making Gotrax GXL V2 one of the best budget electric scooters for commuting. If you are looking for a deal and you don’t mind waiting a little longer, we recommend waiting to see if any Gotrax GXL V2 Black Friday or Cyber Monday deals are released in November 2021.

Speed, Power & Distance
How fast does it go?
The V2 reaches 25 km/h (15.5 m/h) with powerful acceleration from the 250W hub motor at the front. What is interesting is that we have seen people report Gotrax GXL V2 reaching speeds of up to 29 km/h (18 m/h) with adults riding. Very rarely can you find scooters performing better than mentioned suppliers max specifications!
What age/weight is it suitable for?
The GXL V2 max rider weight is just 100 kg (220lbs). Being designed as a commuter electric scooter means most riders will be adults, so heavier adults might need to pick a scooter with a higher max weight.
The GXL V2 manual notes that teenagers under the age of 18 should get parental permission to ride the scooter and advises that the GXL should never be used by children under 16 years old.
What is the range/distance?
With the GXL V2 you can reach a distance of 20 km (12.5 miles) with a full charge of battery. If you need to maneuver in busy streets or sidewalks, or conserve battery life, there are 2 speed modes to switch between max speed mode and economy mode. Additionally, Gotrax Galaxy has a regenerative braking on this scooter, so braking can regenerate some power back to the battery.
Can it be used offroad?
The V2 is an excellent commuter vehicle, but can it be used off-road? Yes, a little, but don’t expect too much. The bigger rubber air tires, compared with some other electric scooters for commuting, should handle tougher soil and some gravel, but don’t buy this scooter to ride through forests! There are much better offroad scooters available.
Does it lose power uphill?
Gotrax Galaxy does not specify how many degrees of altitude GXL can handle or the decrease in maximum speed. From experience riding the GXL V2 , there should be no trouble with small hills but there will be a decline in speed on bigger ones or if you are a heavier rider.
Battery Life & Charging
Gotrax Galaxy batteries Underwriter Lab use UL2271 certification, which are batteries fit for use In light electric vehicles.
How long does it take to charge?
This scooter is packing a 36V, 5.2 ah Lithium-Ion battery that recharges in 4-5 hours. You are able to see battery life on the LED display in the middle of the handlebar if you require a certain amount of charge to do a short trip.
How long will the battery last for?
There are no mentions of battery lifespan and Gotrax Galaxy currently do not sell replacement batteries, but we believe most Lithium-Ion batteries of this standard should last at least 3 years with moderate use.

What brakes does the GXL V2 have?
The V2 include rear disc brakes, which are also often thought boast superiority over electric brakes. Gotrax GXL V2 further includes one exclusive feature that you don’t see often on most other electric scooters. The rear disc brake activates with a foot pedal near the back wheel and the left handle button now offers regenerative braking, in other words, braking recharges your battery.
Is it foldable?
The GXL V2 has an easy folding mechanism. The V2 folds by pulling the tiller towards the back wheel and folding mainframe to the rear fender and hooking it into the rear fender buckle for easy transport or storage.
Is the handlebar comfortable?
The handles are very comfortable with well placed acceleration and brake buttons on different sides for easy use. It also has an LED screen to monitor speed and battery charge.
Does it connect to your smartphone?
While being a great value for your money the GXL, obviously, won’t have all the features as expensive electric scooters. No Bluetooth, smartphone applications, cruise control, and suspension.
Does it have suspension?
Similarly to other scooters meant for commuting, the V2 does not have suspension. However, a great feature that sets this scooter apart from others is the big 8.5-inch pneumatic air rubber tires. These bigger tires compared to some other commuter scooters allow for better grip, handling and absorbing bumps on the road.
Does it work as a regular scooter?
If you ever want to you use Gotrax GXL V2 electric scooter as a basic kick scooter you can, just make sure to turn off the power first.
Build quality and ease of use
GXL is a very pleasant electric scooter to ride and also easy to use because of simple throttle control, brake system, and convenient transportation. This is a big advantage for people using it for everyday commuting.
How easy is it to carry?
We class this electric scooter as a lightweight commuter scooter, which means its designed to be ridden and carried. The GXL V2 also has an easy fold mechanism and weighs only 12 kg (26.5 lbs), so considering its aimed towards adults, it’s not much more than carrying a bag.
How smooth is the ride?
The big 8.5-inch pneumatic air tires provide a good grip on the road or pavement. When going through small gaps between pavement or even mildly rocky path the big rubber air tires should absorb most of the bumps.
Safety and usability on the road
Is the GXL V2 waterproof?
If you are riding your electric scooter on wet surfaces or in rain make sure the scooter is not under a constant stream of water as it’s not 100% waterproof. Gotrax GXL has IP54 waterproof rating, which means it can withstand splashing water but not full submersion.
Does the GXL V2 have lights?
Lights are a really important safety feature if you’re driving at night. Since scooters are not always classified as vehicles, they’re not subject to the same laws and not always produced with lights. Luckily, the GXL has an LED front light and a rear reflector for safety at night.
Gotrax GXL V2 vs Xiaomi M365
It’s no secret that the Xiaomi M365 is one of the most popular electric scooters in 2019, 2020 & potentially 2021, it’s an excellent option from a reputable company and certainly one of the market leaders this year. So, how does the Gotrax GXL V2 compare? All in all, they are very similar scooters, with similar specifications and both are excellent electric scooters. There isn’t much in it, but whilst they are similar electric scooters, the Xiaomi M365 does come out on top in several categories. However, the Xiaomi M365 is more expensive at most retailers. As a new US-based company at the time of writing this article, Gotrax Galaxy ship only to the Contiguous United States, all USA states except Alaska and Hawaii. USA customers will be happy to know that the company provides 5-day shipping.
For the rest of the world we can just sympathize and cannot promise much; making good quality electric scooters it should be a matter of time when Gotrax Galaxy should ship worldwide.
Talking about laws and restrictions, most of USA states class electric vehicles with max speeds under 32 km/h (20 m/h) as street legal. Therefore, Gotrax GXL V2 should have no trouble driving on the streets.

Electric scooters are becoming a popular commuting solution, especially after scooter-sharing companies have made them nearly ubiquitous. With prices as low as $299 for popular electric scooters like the GOTRAX GXL, a common question has become “how durable are they?”
So when it came time for this review, I decided to put the GXL to a harder than normal test. I wanted to see what it could handle. And the results actually surprised me.
The GOTRAX GXL electric scooter is one of the most popular budget-level electric scooters on the market. And in an industry where nearly all budget electric scooters more or less look the same, the GOTRAX GXL actually goes its own way on a few important features.
But before we get into the nitty gritty, let’s check out the tech specs on the GXL.

GOTRAX GXL electric scooter torture testing
Anyone can test an electric scooter on the smooth and sunny bike lanes of southern California. That isn’t going to tell you very much.
Instead, I took my GXL out in the cold, harsh world of Boston’s winter streets. If it can survive roads that have more craters than the Apollo 11 landing site, it should work pretty much anywhere.
A very light snow was falling when I began my test. The temperature was 36ºF (2ºC). Not brutal, but pretty darn cold for this transplant.
I wasn’t going to baby this scooter so I ran my testing in the highest gear. Well, the second gear. There are only two. But this wasn’t a time for ECO mode. So Mode 2 it was, and I was off.
Soon the snow turned to rain but that didn’t stop me. I was flying around at 16.5 mph (26.5 km/h). Somehow I was getting even more speed than the scooter was rated for. That certainly wasn’t going to help me achieve the claimed 12 mi (19 km) of range, but hey – no complaints here.

As my ride transitioned from road to sidewalk to bike lane and back to road, I felt the ride quality change with each surface. The scooter lacks suspension and thus hitting pot holes at speed isn’t the most comfortable exercise. However, the air-filled tires helped absorb the brunt of the shock.
Once I got to sidewalks and bike lanes I found that the ride quality improved and became much more comfortable. To be fair, the ride was just fine on the road as long as the surface quality held up. But this was a torture test after all and I wasn’t taking this scooter on the easy roads.
I definitely appreciated the pneumatic tires – so many companies are going with airless tires these days. While that does prevent flat tires and the headache of changing tubes, it means that the scooter better have some other form of suspension. If not, air-filled tires are nearly a necessity for anyone planning road-riding in an area with less than perfect streets.
But enough about suspension. The ride wasn’t amazing but it was perfectly fine – nothing for me to complain about. The next test was braking. The scooter has a combination of disc brake in the rear and regenerative braking in the front. Both were surprisingly effective. The regenerative braking doesn’t slow you as quickly as a mechanical brake, but it’s just fine for normal braking.
For harder braking, the rear disc brake is activated with an odd foot pedal-like thing in the rear. It took some getting used to, but it worked well once I got the hang of it. It’s not as intuitive as a hand brake, but GOTRAX actually just released a new version of this scooter with a handbrake. It costs a bit more, but if you like the bicycle-style brake lever then you might prefer that model.
The speed of the scooter started out great but slowly dropped as I continued to ride. That’s to be expected and is common in just about every scooter. While I started out at 16.5 mph (26.5 km/h), I was down to around 12-13 mph (19-21 km/h) by the time the battery showed just one bar.
Soon I was coming to the end of my ride and the speed dropped even further. Over the course of about 60 seconds the speed dropped down to around 7 mph and I called it. I pulled out my phone to check and found that I had traveled 12.7 km (8 mi). I was about a half mile (0.8 km) from home so I figured I’d just see what happened if I begged the scooter for more.
As it turned out, the GXL obliged. It wasn’t much, but it scooted me along at around 5 mph (8 km/h). I even felt a bit guilty about turning off the GPS already.
It was slow going and getting pretty boring, so I decided to help it out by kicking for a bit. By the time I made it home the scooter was managing about 2-3 mph (5 km/h) under its own power – at which point I couldn’t really balance anymore and kicking became a necessity.
So while the scooter may give its 12 miles (19 km) of range in Mode 1 on smooth streets and warm weather, I found that in the absolute worst conditions it will still give a bit over 8 miles (13 km) of range. And just for fun, I decided to put my Li-ion battery building skills to the test and make a custom auxiliary battery pack to double its range. Though for most people, even 8 mi (13 km) of range is enough for daily city trips.
I was actually surprised by how well the GOTRAX GXL electric scooter handled the abuse I put it through.
It bounced off curbs and potholes, flew through puddles and skated over brief patches of slush, snow and ice.
Is it the best or most fun electric scooter I’ve ever ridden? Probably not.
Is this scooter going to hold up to years of this kind of use/abuse? Who knows. When possible I try to do long term reviews like this recent 500 mile (800 km) follow up of another electric scooter. So perhaps I’ll be back in a few months to see how this scooter is holding up. Until then, it’s hard to say anything bad about a $299 electric scooter that does exactly what you ask of it – no more, no less.

Battery gotrax replacement
Gotrax GXL Scooter Battery Pack Replacement
Remove the console/head unit from the scooter by putting one foot on the scooters base and lifting up on the handlebars.
Tip: Try to lift as straight as possible out of the tiller. Use caution as extreme force may damage your scooter console or battery connections.
While the battery is out, it is a great time to check the connections at the bottom of the tiller. Look down the tiller and ensure the pins are grouped together tightly and free of arching or debris. (If you see an issue, please stop and consult a technician before proceeding.)
Grab the new battery pack and ensure that your are installing the battery pack correctly. There is a groove at the bottom of the battery that must align with the motor adapter in order to supply power to the motor. Once you ensure the position is correct, gently slide the pack into the tiller.
Reattach the console/head unit by sliding it back into place. Make sure the thread part of the console aligns with the drilled holes for the locking hook and gently press down to ensure the console is secure on the battery.
If it is hard to install, stop and inspect the consoles pins under the head unit. If damaged do not proceed.
Install the locking hook and the two screws into the head unit. Tighten the screws firmly. Now you are finished and ready to test your work. Power on your scooter and take it for a test drive.
One of the great things about owning an electric scooter is that they require so little maintenance. Unlike cars, or even bikes, which need regular trips to the mechanic and routine replacement parts, electric scooters that are treated well do not need to be tuned up, greased, or topped with oil before a ride. This makes them ideal personal vehicles for short commutes and trips around town.
There is, however, one exception. Improper use and bad charging habits can significantly shorten the life of a scooter’s battery. Conversely, good habits can prolong its life and keep you on the road, trouble free, for years.
