Sours: https://convertf.com/easel-software-tutorial/

I like Easel because it's the easiest way I know to convert an image into an engraving. But Easel is only compatible with GRBL machines such as Inventables' own X-Carve, and my CNC router runs on the RAMPS 1.4 board with Marlin firmware. I converted an Easel file to run on my modified version of Marlin, but I'll make the instructions as general as possible, because in theory it should be possible to use Easel - generated G-code on any CNC machine.

This Instructable does require you to mess around with the G-code a bit, but shouldn't require any actual coding knowledge.

You will need

  • A G-code file generated by Easel
  • A G-code file which runs on your CNC machine (generated by another program, such as LazyCam, Cam.py or SketchUCam)
  • A plain text editor: Notepad on Windows, and Editra on Mac, will work well.

2:59 Export G-code from Easel: In Easel, click on Machine->Advanced, click Generate G-code, then download the G-code.

3:18 Open both G-code files in a plain text editor.

4:31 Identify the 'header' and 'footer' of each file. These are the blocks of G-code before the first movement command, and after the last movement command. Those movement commands are usually something like G1 Z5.0000 in router G-code.

6:33 Copy the 'header' and 'footer' sections from the file which wasn't generated by Easel, and paste then in place of the 'header' and 'footer' in the Easel G-code.

7:25 Look at the file that wasn't generated by Easel. If it contains feedrate commands (if it has something like F456.78 on the end of each G0 / G1 line) - skip this step. If that file doesn't have feedrate commands, you need to remove those from the Easel G-code. Use the Find / Replace function in your plain text editor to replace them with empty space. That shouldn't take long because Easel usually only defines two different feedrates.

9:35 Check if the file that wasn't generated by Easel contains negative Z values. If it does have negative Z values, skip this step. If it doesn't, you'll need to replace all the negative Z values in the Easel file with Z0. Then use a G92 command in the header to set the depth of the engraving or cut. For example, G92 X0 Y0 Z1 will result in the machine cutting 1mm deep into the material in a single pass. This is fine if you're cutting shapes or engraving a flat image, but if you are cutting a 3D shape, this process won't work very well, because you'd have to change all the different Z values in the Easel file. Also, the Z values in the Easel file which weren't negative now define the Z safe travel height, so they should all be set to a value higher than the Z value in the G92 line. For example, if my file had G92 X0 Y0 Z1, I would choose a safe travel height of at least Z2.

13:03 Save the modified Easel file and load it in your favoured G-code sender. I use Pronterface on Mac, because it works well with Marlin.

13:27 You're ready to cut! Because I use Marlin with the G92 X0 Y0 Z(cut depth) command, I set the machine up with the router bit touching the surface of the workpiece, at the point that I want to treat as the origin (X0, Y0) of the cut.

Basic Easel Tools - Inventables CNC Course

How to Use Easel by TpT

Easel by TpT™ is a suite of digital tools that seamlessly integrate with TpT, empowering educators to easily create custom, interactive digital activities from their own original materials or by adapting one of the teacher-created resources from TpT.

Are you ready to make your lessons interactive and device-ready with Easel’s intuitive suite of digital tools?

How to Get Started with Easel by TpT

Easel’s flexible tools can be used with your entire teaching process. Get started using Easel with these simple steps.

1) Discover

Find hundreds of thousands of ready-to-go digital resources on TpT by filtering for “Easel Activities” on the homepage or looking for the Easel label on the TpT resources you love.

You can also choose to upload your own PDFs* or even make an original resource from scratch. Click the “Create” button on the “My Activities” page of Easel, and you’ll be prompted to upload your files or start with a blank page.

Once you’ve decided which resource you want to customize — or if you want to create your own — open up Easel to begin preparing.

2) Prepare

Easel allows you to tailor each resource to your students’ needs. In “Prepare” mode, you take an existing resource and digitize it — or create your own resource from scratch — so your students can work with it on a device. You’ll customize and make your resources interactive by adding answer boxes, instructions to students, movable shapes, and more.

Then, use “Preview” mode to see how your resources will look for your students.Click the “Preview” tab and try out the interactive elements, like any text answer boxes you’ve added, to make sure they’re ready for your students.

3) Instruct

You can also use all the annotation tools in “Preview” mode to turn your screen into a digital whiteboard. Share your screen in real-time so that students can follow along. None of the annotations you make in “Preview” mode will carry over once you assign it, so it wipes clean after you’re done modeling your lesson.

4) Assign

You can assign your digital activity in one of three ways: (1) through Google Classroom, (2) by generating a unique URL and pasting it into the learning management system (LMS) of your choice, or (3) by emailing the URL to your students. Your students will get a code that allows them to complete the activity with the same set of annotation tools (minus the ability to add answer boxes or make static shapes movable) and turn it in to you for review — all online.

5. Review

On the “Assign & Review” section or on the “My Activities” page, you can view which students have turned in their work and review submitted work by quickly scrolling through each response. Simply click on the activity you want to view, and look for the class roster at the top. Use the drop-down menu to see who has turned in their work and then use the arrows to easily move through each response.

Easel Assessments

Easel Assessments allows teachers to create and assign self-grading quizzes, and track student performance with this easy-to-use quiz creation tool. You can use Easel Assessments for things like bell ringers, exit tickets, or quick checks to gauge understanding in the middle of a lesson.

To create an assessment, type in a question, choose if you’d like to include an image, and then indicate which selection is the correct answer. After students complete the assessment, they are provided with a report about their results and the percentage of the questions they got correct. Teachers will also receive a report with individual student and class-level data, making it easier to understand comprehension and differentiate instruction.

How to Use Easel Assessments

Ready to get started with Easel? This interactive tutorial will walk you through the basic tools and functionality so you can learn while doing.

Easel Users – Quick Start Guide

Easel is an all in one browser based CAD/CAM package that includes everything you need to make parts under one platform. Use this quick start guide to get setup and connected on Easel. Minimillr machines uses GRBL and are compatible with Easel. This guide also applies to other CNC routers running GRBL firmware.

Visit https://easel.inventables.com/ and set up an Easel account.

In the Easel editor, click the blue Carve button in the top right, you will be prompted to install the Easel driver. A blue button means the Minimillr CNC Router is not connected. The Carve button will turn green when the machine is found and connected. Use this quick start guide to correctly connect over USB by following these steps.

You will need the USB to Serial driver for your machine installed first. Then download and install the Easel driver.

Click the Carve button again after installation, you will be told Easel cannot see the machine. This is because it cannot detect the correct COM port assigned to your machine.

Manually set up the machine up as Other(grbl). Set the model to Other.

If Easel cannot auto-detect the machine, click the ‘Enter COM port manually’.

Use the COM port number shown in Control Panel>Device Manager under ‘Ports’, expand to see the allocated COM port. With the correct port selected and the machine on, you can control the machine from Easel.

The Carve button will be green when the connection is made. You can then jog the mill, and follow the steps to start cutting.

Note that if you unplug the machine from the USB port, and plug it back into a different one than the COM port assigned to your CNC router will change. So you will need to make sure Easel is looking for the correct port so it can connect.

For a Easel software tutorial, check out this Easel getting started video from Inventables. There also are many Easel tutorials on YouTube.

Introduction To Easel - Part 1

Video: How to use Easel to generate G-Code for Maslow

Hey guys, couple of Easel questions. Is there a way in there to tell it to cut certain parts out first, or in a specific order? Especially while experimenting I would like to have it cut the simple portions first before attempting the more daring parts… So I can shut it down and not lose the whole piece.

Is that what you mean when talking about G-Code Optimizer? I’ve definitely noticed in the simulation pane that it doesn’t always pick the most efficient route or depth adjustments. For example I’d rather have it stay in one relative location and finish that to full depths before moving across the sheet (sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn’t, hence my question if that can be controlled).

I dig Easel and want to get good at it, the video was very helpful, are there any more hints or tips or tricks that might seem obvious when going Easel to Maslow but aren’t?

EDIT: I’d also love to be able to save certain Maslow specific settings as defaults in there, like workspace and material dimensions, and the aforementioned stepovers, but haven’t been able to see that as possible.
