Beam Dental adding 150 jobs, moving Columbus HQ again

Beam Dental needs to move to a larger headquarters for the second time in as many years as it plans to add 150 new jobs in Columbus.

The technology company pairing digital dental insurance with an internet-connected toothbrush already has added nine of those hires, for a total of 50 employees today in a downtown office, Columbus 2020 reports.

Beam's jobs forecast is double the three-year total it estimated when it moved last May to 266 N. Fourth St. Hires will include engineering, sales and claims processing, the economic development group reported.

Engineering staff alone has tripled in the past few months, according to an employee blog post on the company website.

The address where it's moving next month has not yet been released, but Beam expects to spend $1.5 million on leasehold improvements, Columbus 2020 said. The company, incorporated as Beam Technologies Inc., said it is not yet commenting beyond a news release.

Right after last year's move Beam closed a $22.5 million round led by Silicon Valley's Kleiner Perkins, Central Ohio's fifth-largest venture capital round of 2018.

The Ohio State Tax Credit Authority on Monday approved a 2.1%, nine-year tax credit on annual payroll for the new jobs, estimated at $13.5 million.

The company would save about $2.39 million over the nine years if it creates all 150 pledged jobs by the end of 2022 and meets other terms of the deal. It also would collect on new jobs exceeding the jobs goal.

Beam is also required to retain the 41 jobs with $4 million payroll it had when incentive talks started, and stay in the city for 12 years.

The incentive helps keep the growth in Columbus, the Ohio Development Services Agency said. Beam had considered sites in California, Illinois and Kentucky, where it still has a manufacturing facility.

"Kentucky has been aggressive in proactively recruiting the company to expand within the state," the agency said.

From the beginning, community support and access to skilled workers was critical to Beam's success, said a statement from co-founder and CEO Alex Frommeyer.

“Columbus really impressed us with its digital talent ecosystem, which has proven to be vital for our rapid expansion and was a core reason behind our decision to build the company here,” he said.

Frommeyer and two fellow engineers founded Beam seven years ago in Louisville, Kentucky, and moved to Columbus in 2014 when Drive Capital LLC invested. It started with the smart toothbrush and app that provides feedback and collects data on brushing habits.

Two years later it rolled out affordable insurance plans that help employers save money through better preventative dental care, driven by data from the brushes. The company sends members a free brush and monthly supplies of brush heads and custom toothpaste.

The company was first licensed was first licensed to sell insurance in California in early 2016. The company is licensed in 25 states and aiming for 40 by year's end.

“Beam’s rapid growth in a competitive landscape is a great example of how innovative startups can thrive in the Columbus Region,” Mayor Andrew Ginther said in a statement. “The company’s continued investment in our community ... will further solidify Columbus as a leading market for insurance carriers and entrepreneurs.”

Technically, Beam is licensed as a third-party administrator for insurance plans underwritten by Madison, Wisconsin-based National Guardian Life Insurance Co., according to the Ohio Department of Insurance. Beam also designs and administers vision plans from industry giant VSP Global.

Susan Jacobs, Creating Buzz Around Dental Insurance

Susan Jacobs is the SVP of Marketing at Beam Dental, an insurance technology startup that provides its members with a complimentary smart toothbrush for tracking brushing behavior. She started her career in non-profit, pursued an MBA to enhance her Marketing chops, held consulting roles at both Booz Allen Hamilton and McKinsey, and was most recently the Senior Vice President and Global Brand Leader at Hertz.

In this feature, Susan shares with us the benefits of starting a career in non-profit, what she learned at Indiana’s Kelley School of Business, what attracted her to consulting and her advice for switching between consulting and industry. Read along to soak up her incredible career advice for ambitious women, such as yourself.

Early Career

You received your undergraduate degree in Economics from Salem College. How did your studies affect your early career?

I think Economics is a great foundation for anyone interested in working in business - in my mind, no other discipline provides as much context, logic, and explanation for why markets (and, ultimately, people) work the way they do. It’s a great foundation for anything else you want to pursue. For me personally, I grew up always wanting to become a doctor, so I went to college assuming I would study pre-Med. In my first semester of my freshman year I took an Intro to Macroeconomics class, fell in love, and never looked back!

You started off your career in Economic Development. What skills from your first job have you carried with you?

I worked for an economic development nonprofit in North Carolina and my job was to help put together tax and other financial incentives to attract businesses and developers to the area, in order to spur economic development and improve the tax base long term. Our particular focus was on recruiting artists, gallery owners, restaurateurs, and mixed use developers to improve urban areas through arts and culture. Starting my career in nonprofit helped me learn not only how to be resourceful and scrappy, but also that there is never a job too big or too small.

After almost 5 years of working for the Downtown Winston-Salem Partnership, you decided to pursue an MBA at Indiana’s Kelley School of Business. What inspired you to return to school, and what was your biggest takeaway from the experience?

I would highly recommend pursuing an MBA for anyone who is thinking about it. For me, I knew I wanted to pursue marketing and going back to school made sense not only because Kelley has a nationally-renowned consumer marketing program, but also for the hands-on experience the school offers and its vast alumni network across the globe. Kelley in particular places a high emphasis on the analytical sides of Marketing - the science, in addition to the art - and the role that Marketing as a function can play in driving both the top and bottom lines of a company. One small (but useful) thing that has always stuck with me was a saying from a “category marketing” class - Stock Outs Mean Walk Outs - meaning, if you run out of product or can’t get it in front of a customer for any reason, you have likely lost them forever. It’s a simple but important reminder that distribution is everything.

Post-MBA, you joined Booz Allen Hamilton as a Senior Consultant in the Strategy & Operations Group. What attracted you to Consulting?

I’ve had the opportunity to work in the consulting industry twice - first for Booz Allen Hamilton right after business school, and second with McKinsey & Company in the middle of my career. What I love about consulting is how it challenges you to look holistically and cross-functionally at a problem and understand the interconnectedness of how businesses work in order to really drive solutions. I loved the project-based nature of consulting work, and the impact that you can have is practically bar-none. It definitely prepares you well for the general management track and any role with revenue delivery or P&L responsibility. In many ways, it’s almost like going to business school a second (or third!) time.


After switching from Consulting to Industry and back, you joined Hertz - where you most recently served as Senior Vice President and Global Brand Leader for the Dollar, Thrifty, and Firefly brands. What attracted you to Hertz, and how did your previous experience help you turnaround the brands?

The Role:

Beam is looking for an experienced Senior Data Scientist to help spearhead Data Science at Beam. This person will act as a technical subject matter expert, helping to build the foundation of Data Science at Beam in conjunction with our Data Management, Analytics, and Actuarial teams. The Senior Data Scientist will collaborate closely with senior leaders to better understand our market and how to advance Beam’s products and key risk models. Functionally, this will include taking high-level business challenges, translating them into a concrete, quantitative framework, and shepherding solutions from POC to production and deployment. A Senior Data Scientist is expected to join the team with years of industry and academic experience in directly relevant topics.

What You Will Bring:

You’re a Senior Data Scientist who possesses significant work experience and a deep understanding of applied statistics. You have not only delivered from start to finish on high impact data science work streams but also led the identification, scoping, and shepherding of key Data Science initiatives. You love to write code AND solve high impact business problems in doing so. You have a strong passion for teaching others and staying up to date with current industry trends and best practices.

What you will do:

  • Research, build, and test predictive models that will advance Beam’s machine learning initiatives
  • Partner with actuarial teams to address quantitative insurance problems (e.g., claims forecasting, pricing, fraud detection, reserving, and estimating customer lifetime value)
  • Tackle quantitative business problems to aid overall business strategy including customer segmentation, win rate prediction, lead-scoring, and outreach optimization
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with key stakeholders and the analytics team to explain the impact and outcome of data science work streams and make recommendations
  • Work closely with the Data Management team to promote best practices on data acquisition, feature extraction, model automation, and deployment in a production environment
  • Provide thought leadership on both industry and data science trends to inform and optimize Beam’s business practices
  • Promote data science at Beam to ensure its accessibility and trustworthiness for all facets of the business

What skills will help you be successful:

  • 5+ years practical experience as a data scientist, preferably in the insurance industry
  • In-depth training and education in a quantitative discipline, PhD preferred
  • Deep knowledge of applied statistics and fundamental machine learning concepts
  • Demonstrated experience building, validating, and applying statistical machine learning methods to real world problems
  • Experience collaborating with data engineering and data management teams to deploy models in production, monitor model drift, and implement re-training strategy
  • Experience writing SQL queries
  • Advanced skills in R or Python
  • Experience with BigQuery ML and TensorFlow a plus
  • Experience identifying automation opportunities and using associated tools a plus (i.e., Selenium, Google Chrome Puppeteer)
