This page is meant to help you troubleshoot the Nissan Murano P trouble code. It covers Nissan Murano P meaning, symptoms, causes, and possible solutions. WIth the Murano, OBDII P is often caused by a bad oxygen sensor, but there can be other causes as well. Jumping straight to replacing the O2 sensor can cost you time and money.

Nissan Murano P Diagnosis

P is a very common trouble code. This code number references a number that is given to you when you plug your Nissan Murano into a OBDII scanner. It doesn&#;t matter which model you have, this OBDII code has the same meaning for all of them (+)

Nissan Murano P OBDII Code Defined

Murano P Code Symptoms

P is a OBDII trouble code. The code technically stands for:

Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold

Your Murano has at least two oxygen sensors, one before and after the catalytic converter. Among the many jobs that oxygen sensors have is they have to measure the emissions levels coming in and out of the converter.

When the readings from the upstream and downstream oxygen sensors show similar readings, the vehicle will throw the service engine soon light (P).

These readings shouldn’t match, since the catalytic converter is supposed to be scrubbing the exhaust. When the numbers match, the software in your Murano believes that the catalytic converter is no longer doing its job.

Nissan Murano P Code Symptoms

P Nissan Murano

The P code in a Nissan Murano will often be thrown one of your oxygen sensors are not functioning properly. Typically, the code will be triggered by the upstream oxygen sensor (before the converter).

There aren&#;t usually any drivability issues associated with P For most people the first sign that anything is wrong at all is the service engine soon light coming on.

Here are the typical symptoms that something is wrong when you have code P

  • Fuel Efficiency- May or may not suffer depending on how much the catalytic converter is clogged.
  • Loss of Power&#; It is a really strange feeling to drive a vehicle with a catalytic converter that is going out. Typically, they&#;ll idle ok and drive normal under a light load. Whenever the engine is put under a heavy load it&#;ll feel like it is running out of gas. It&#;s very similar to the symptoms of a bad fuel filter.
  • Service Engine Light&#; Often, this is the only symptom of the Nissan Murano P code.

Top Causes of P in the Nissan Murano

There are many things that can cause the P trouble code in your Murano. Here are the most common ones.

  • Oxygen Sensor&#; The P codes is thrown when the oxygen sensors on both sides of the exhaust have very similar readings. When the oxygen sensor is bad, it can cause a false reading and trigger the code. If the engine does not exhibit any of the decreased performance associated with a bad catalytic converter, it very well may be the oxygen sensor (if you haven&#;t noticed the performance loss yet).
  • Catalytic Converter&#; A catalytic converter is responsible for scrubbing out as much pollution as possible from the Murano’s exhaust. Over time, they can become clogged. Although, modern catalytic converters are supposed to last the life of most vehicles, it could be there is some underlying problem if it has clogged.
  • O2 Sensor Wiring&#; Over time, the oxygen sensor wiring can go bad. It is especially volatile since it is right next to the hot exhaust at all times. The downstream oxygen sensor wiring is also volatile since it is so far from the ECM (more distance to travel = more area to fail).
  • Murano Timing&#; If your Murano is misfiring or the exhaust timing is off, this can affect the gasses that are actually going to the O2 sensors enough to cause the P code to register.
  • ExhaustLeak&#; If there&#;s a noticeable exhaust leak coming from the vehicle it can change what the O2 sensors register enough to throw the P code.
  • Engine Temp Sensor&#; If the computer doesn&#;t know what the engine temp is it&#;ll keep the fuel mixture rich. When the fuel mixture is rich, the exhaust the O2 sensors see will be out of range and it could throw the sensor.

Nissan Murano P Code Possible Solutions

Often, the oxygen sensor is the cause of P Specifically it&#;ll usually be the O2 sensor(s) on the upstream side of the catalytic converter.

But, don&#;t be surprised if it&#;s not. It would be a good idea to check the exhaust for leaks first. You should be able to hear an exhaust leak easily underneath of the vehicle.

Unless you have an exhaust leak, you&#;ll probably need to test the O2 sensors and/or catalytic converters. Here are a couple of good guides to help with that.

Good luck figuring out what is causing P with your Nissan Murano. If there are any inaccuracies, or anything that you feel could improve the article, please feel free to comment or message. Thank you.

Nissan Murano catalytic converter replacement

My mechanic is quoting me quite a bit to replace two cc on the car. It's a single exhaust, but there are two cats?

After doing some research, I can find that the cats are about $ each.

That's a big difference to make up in his labor quote. Is this right? How extensive is the work?
Nissan has a TSB out for the computer being over sensitive to the issue.

Have you tried cleaning the TB, MAF and changing spark plugs?

[This message has been edited by 1agswitchin4lanes (edited 11/5/ p).]

No haven't done any of these.

Sounds like I need a 2nd opinion.

Recommend anyone in College Station/Bryan?

Thanks for your help.
TSB = technical service bulletin

TB = Throttle body

MAF = Mass airflow sensor
Why does he think they need replacing? And yes you probably have a pre-cat convertor also.
Brazos Valley Automotive gets good recommendations on the Aggieland board (we have never used them).

Why does he think they need replacing?

Well first, I have noticed the car driving a little sluggish. The check engine light code probably gave him an error code that pointed to the Oxygen/exhaust system.
Have you ever replaced the plugs?
i have always used the muffin shop in austin. good folks, great prices.
, miles, original plugs, I would assume that changing plugs would help clean up the emissions and help performance and mileage. Maybe even fix your check engine light issue.
Human has 36k posts on the GB; where would he find the time to do auto maintenance?
Texting and maintenance is my thing
Why CS? Do you live here?
My guess is P or P

P NISSAN MURANO Code - Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold Bank 1

Engine-Codes - Nissan - P NISSAN MURANO

Repair Importance Level: 2/3

Repair Difficulty Level: 2/3  What is this?

What does this mean?

&#;P NISSAN MURANO code possible causes

  • Faulty Three-way Catalyst Converter Bank 1
  • Exhaust Tube
  • Intake Air Leaks
  • Faulty Oxygen (O2) Sensor
  • Faulty Fuel injector(s)
  • Leaking Fuel Injector (s)
  • Faulty Spark plugs
  • Improper Ignition Timing
  • Faulty Engine Control Module (ECM)
  • Dirty Air Filter

&#;How is the P NISSAN MURANO code repair?

Start by checking the "Possible Causes" listed above. Visually inspect the related wiring harness and connectors. Check for damaged components and look for broken, bent, pushed out, or corroded connector's pins.

What does this mean?

&#;P NISSAN MURANO code tech notes

As the code description implies the P code means that the vehicle's control module has detected that the three-way catalytic converter is not working properly (is not as efficient as the factory is expecting). Replacing the oxygen (O2) sensors may sometimes fix the code, but in most cases, the catalytic convert needs to be replaced to correct the problem. If the P code is combined with other codes, try fixing the other codes first.

&#;What is the cost to diagnose the P NISSAN MURANO code

The cost to diagnose the P NISSAN MURANO code is hour of labor. The auto repair's diagnosis time and labor rates vary by location, vehicle's make and model, and even your engine type. Most auto repair shops charge between $75 and $ per hour.

&#;When is the P NISSAN MURANO code detected?

- Three way catalytic converter Bank 1 does not operate properly.
- Three way catalyst converter Bank 1 does not have enough oxygen storage capacity.

&#;What are P NISSAN MURANO code possible symptoms?

  • Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)

&#;What is P NISSAN MURANO code meaning?

The Engine Control Module (ECM) monitors the switching frequency ratio of heated oxygen sensors 1 (front O2 sensor) and heated oxygen sensors 2 (rear O2 sensor).
A three way catalyst converter (Manifold) with high oxygen storage capacity will indicate a low switching frequency of heated oxygen sensor 2. As oxygen storage capacity decreases, the heated oxygen sensor 2 switching frequency will increase.
When the frequency ratio of heated oxygen sensors 1 and 2 approaches a specified limit value, the three way catalyst malfunction is diagnosed.
