Lag in general between consoles and PC is a pretty layered. Lag sources aggregate and this is just one, small lag source. If you aren't using the same display or even if you aren't using the same kind of display the same way, you could have a major lag source on one that isn't on the other.

Not sure about MK, but many FG's using the Unreal Engine have had additional latency on PS4. Sometimes efforts have been made to lower the problem, and other times not. Like Tekken used to have much higher input latency on PS4 than PC and it was something they worked to improve. I think it's still higher but it's better than it was. Upper SC6 players say SC6 on PS4 still has a gross amount of input latency compared to PC, and just don't want to go near that version of the game.

On PC people naturally tend to end up using monitors which trends towards lower display lag over TV's. TV's are much better than they were even a couple years ago, but you still have to be deliberate about what you buy to make sure you don't have several frames of delay added by your display device. So, it's possible for someone to end up with a lot less lag on PC just by accident and virtue of PS4 tending to suffer more as a platform than PC.

If someone was noticing a difference between platforms is also more likely that they are noticing those things, which are larger sources of lag, then an additional 7ms on a controller.

To make things even more muddled, even with PC being the better option lag wise, Steam can add latency if it's applying controller support for a game.

Know that there is nothing like 0 input lag. It will obviously take some time for your console or PC to render the required graphics and some more for your monitor or TV to display it.

Now understand that at 60Hz, you get one new frame displayed every 16.67 milliseconds (1/60 = 16.67.) That is your inherent display lag. Add this to the hardware-end input lag, a few more milliseconds, you get around 20 milliseconds of input lag already.

Polling rate

Generally, a polling rate of around 500 Hz is considered substantial for gaming across mice and keyboard.

My controller has started lagging on my PC, so I did some research, and here is how I solve the issue.

The easiest way to reduce controller input lag on PC is to disable Vsync. To turn Vsync off go to Setting > Graphics > Graphic then disable it. You can overclock the controller to reduce the controller lag even further.

If you don’t want to Overclock your controller, then there are still a few tricks that can help you reduce the input of the controller without Overclocking it.

Well, I was just a joke, but long story short. Here are the most common reasons for your controller to lag on PC:

Faulty USB cable

If you have connected your controller using a wired connection, then make sure it’s not faulty. The easiest way to be sure is to use a different cable. If it’s lagging then the cause for delay is something else.

Faulty Bluetooth adaptor

To connect our controller via Bluetooth, our PC either need to have built-in Bluetooth in your motherboard or a Bluetooth adaptor.

Although having a Faulty adaptor is not that uncommon, but it’s definitely worth noting.

Limit your FPS

When it comes to FPS we all love to see crazy high numbers flashing on the screen, especially when our PC is top-tier. But, sometimes it can cause some serious latency issues on your controller.

If you are getting 200+ FPS, then limiting it down to 144 won’t affect your game a lot, and if it can solve the issue, then I say it’s totally worth it,

High resolution

One of the most common reason for input lag on PC is High resolution, and lowering your resolution to 1080p can help reduce the controller lag.

Higher resolution means higher load on CPU & GPU and it can sometimes slow down your CPU that can lead to controller input delay.

Even if your CPU is capable you should keep your resolution to 1080p especially in multiplayer games.

Should we use a wired or wireless connection?

I know this one seems really obvious to the most of you, We all know that wired connection is faster and more stable.

Well, this is not the case for every controller.

Rocket Science has did some experiment and the results were really surprising.

DS4 (Bluetooth) surprisingly only has a 2.8ms input delay, whereas DuelShock 4 (wired) has a 10ms delay.

So, should you use a Wired or Wireless connection?

You should go for wired connection, it’s faster for every controller except DS4. But more importantly it’s much more stable, even if you are using DS4.

So, if you are not using DS4 then you should use a USB cable for a faster and stable connection.

For DuelShock 4: Use a wired connection if you are planning on Overclocking, if not then use wireless.

I have explained the reason for that below.

Method 1: Overclock the controller

In this method we are going to overclock the polling rate of the controller to reduce the controller lag.

What is the polling rate? you ask.

The polling rate of a controller is simply how many times the controller reports its position to the PC. A higher polling rate means lower latency, while a lower polling rate means higher latency.

So, it’s highly likely that if your controller is lagging because of the high polling rate. So, to reduce latency we are going to increase it’s polling rate.

To reduce lag we are going to usea software called hidusbf. And yes that’s the name of the software.

Note: Overclocking is not allowed in competitive games, so don’t use it if you take part in competitive, but other than that it’s perfectly fine.

So, with further ado let’s see how to do it.

Step 1: First, download the hidusbf.zip from [here]. And extract it anywhere you like.

Step 2: Click on the “DRIVER” folder.

Step 3: Then click on setup to open the program.

Step 4: By default mice is selected in the “Devices” change it to “All”.

Step 5: The next thing we have to do is to locate the controller. The easiest way is to look at the “Child Name”.

Step 6: Once you find the controller, “click on Install Services”.

Step 7: Once services are installed check in the box, “Filter on Device” and change the Rate from default to 1000.

Step 8: Disconnect and connect your controller,

There you go. Now your controller is overclocked.

If you want to verify whether your controller is overclocked or not. Just reopen the application, and if the rate is 1000 then you have successfully overclocked your controller.

If for some reason you want to reverse the overclock. just uncheck the “Filter on Device” and set the rate to “Default”.

How to reduce controller lag on DuelShock 4?

Connect your DS4 via. Bluetooth.

On DuelShock 4, Bluethooth version has a input delay 2.8ms, whereas USB has a input delay of 10.0ms. So, using a Bluethooth version is much better,

OverClock your controller

Things can become a little complicated if you are planning on Overclocking.

If you Overclock a wired DS4 to 1000 polling rate then it can have the same input lag as the Bluetooth ones.

I simple words an overclocked wired DS4 and DS4 (Bluetooth) roughly have same input lag.

If we are going to get the same input lag, then what is the need of overclocking the controller?

The answer is consistency. Even though Bluetooth version has less input lag, but USB is much more consistency.

So if you overclocking a wired DS4 then you can get around 2.0ms input delay and much more consistency.

Long story short, use a wired connection if you are planning on Overclocking, if not then use wireless.

Hey I seem to be having this odd issue, it's not all the time but it can happen and honestly, is a pain when it does.

Occasionally, it'll feel like the PS4 controller has disconnected or something because I'll press a button and the input won't happen right away OR the input will happen for too long (example I want to stop running but it keeps me going for a bit longer)

It's a weird problem, I don't have this issue when I'm using it on PS4 so I'm not sure if there's any advice you can give to help?

Wired or wireless? I had that problem when 1) my cable was dying, and 2) when my bluetooth receiver was in a suboptimal location.

It's wireless, I play with the laptop hooked up to the TV... I wonder if the placement of the laptop is the issue? It's not too far from where I had it before but it is kind of placed a bit behind the TV now.

I have DS4s and DS3s and I find that the DS4s have way less range when hooked up to my PC than the DS3s. At first I had a thumbnail dongle plugged directly into computer and I'd have the exact symptoms you're describing if I was anywhere more than a couple feet away from my computer. But I read a tip online that I should plug the dongle into a USB extension cable and plug THAT into the computer and that gave me much better range.

If you're on a laptop I guess you're using built-in Bluetooth? Probably just gonna have to move the laptop in that case. Or just use a different controller... I think the way the DS4 is recognized on the PC it does something dumb that makes its range wonky.

bluetooth/wireless on a PC will always introduce input lag since the device is driver based plugged into a USB or another header.

Also the mini connector on PS4 controllers are trash and it doesnt surprise me that its disconnecting on you.

They all would such equally. The best option is to get a controller with a long cable. 3rd party controllers have their own firmware and are generally plug and play. Otherwise I suggest the Switch in wired mode because of the type C connection.

So what if wireless is the only option? Do either of them output wirelessly better than another one?

BT is lower lag than wired for whatever reason. Sounds like interference or your controller is dying. You could try running a usb extension with a dongle but I would test the pad wired first.

Yeah, the issue in this case isn't the extra milliseconds of input lag due to the type of device being used so much as something going wrong. But given my experience and what I've read online about interference issues with the DS4 I do think it could be worth using a different controller. Sadly I don't have any experience with wireless controllers other than the DS3 and DS4 so I can't comment beyond that. The DS3 does seem less subject to interference but I have no idea about controllers like the Xbox 360 / Xbox One's.
