On April 17, 2019, as part of the New York International Auto Show, the updated Toyota Highlander was presented. It is worth noting that the model is not a restyling, but the fourth generation in a row, which means that it has acquired a large portion of innovations on all fronts. The novelty has received a changed palette of power units, a more spacious interior, a wide range of optional equipment and a refreshed exterior. It is not difficult to distinguish the fourth generation from its predecessor. Although the car has retained its brutal shape, the changes can be called cardinal.

How Much Oil Does a Toyota Highlander Take?

The 2021 Toyota Highlander with the 3.5L 6-cyl engine (engine code 2GR-FKS) takes 5.8 quarts (with filter) of 0W-20 synthetic oil. The Toyota Highlander with a 2.5L 4-cyl engine (engine code A25A-FXS) takes 4.8 quarts (with filter) of 0W-16 or 0W-20 synthetic oil. A new oil filter and a crush washer are required.

First of all, I would like to note the reduced radiator grille. Instead of massive ribs, it received a black mesh design and a pentagonal shape. The central air intake has also decreased. From now on, it is a narrow elongated ventilation slot. The headlights have received a more modern LED filling, and the “fog lights” are located a little higher. The possibilities for personalization have expanded. A choice of new light-alloy wheels 18-20 inches and a rich palette of colors.

The 10,000 mile (or 12 month) service, on the other hand, includes all the above as well as an oil and filter change. Therefore, it is. Under normal operating conditions, you should have it serviced every 5k miles/6 months, but you should only change the oil/filter every 10k miles/12 months.

Remember that your first 2 years/25k miles of ToyotaCare maintenance follow this schedule. Therefore, you get up to five free visits, but only two oil/filter changes (at 10k & 20k miles or 1 & 2 years). Of course, you are free to change your oil more often, but you have to pay for it.

Special operating conditions

It is also worth mentioning that I used the word “normal” above when referring to the operating conditions. The maintenance manual contains alternative instructions if you have exposed your Highlander to “special” operating conditions.

These conditions include:

  • Driving on dirt or dusty roads,
  • Towing, using a car roof rack or driving with a heavy vehicle load,
  • Repeated journeys of < 5 miles in cold weather and/or
  • Extensive driving in neutral and/or at low speed on long distances (e.g. police cars, taxis or delivery vehicles).

In these cases, you should accelerate your oil/filter change schedule to every 5k miles or 6 months, whichever comes first. There are some other (additional) maintenance items that need to be handled under these conditions, but this is an issue for another day.

Synthetic Oil Good or Bad for Toyota Vehicle

Interested in the right oil for your Toyota? Can’t find complete information? This guide has all the information you need.

First, let’s talk about synthetic oil. Synthetic oil contains fewer impurities than conventional motor oil. The oil has better properties and performs better at high temperatures. The viscosity is better, but it is also more brittle than other motor oils. Synthetic oil may be the best choice for your car. But it’s not that simple. In fact, many factors influence the choice of synthetic or conventional motor oil.

Synthetic oil is for you if:

1. You forget about oil changes. Synthetic oil is more resistant to adverse conditions. And if you didn’t change your oil on time, it wouldn’t be a big problem if you were using conventional motor oil. Simply put, synthetic material gives you some insurance against engine damage by not having to change your oil.

2. Low mileage car. If it takes you a year to get 5,000 miles, synthetic oil is a great choice for you. Synthetic oil doesn’t lose its effectiveness after six months of use, unlike regular motor oil.

3. Severe driving situations. Synthetic oil is more resistant to harsh driving situations than conventional motor oil. This is a big plus when running the engine at maximum engine temperatures (both heat and cold). Here are some examples of people running on synthetic oil.

  • Carrier rollers. If your job requires the engine to idle frequently and for long periods of time. With no air supply to cool the engine, then synthetic oil is an excellent and optimal choice. This could be a situation like on a construction site, in delivery service, or in a cab.
  • Driving at high altitudes or in the desert. If you work or live in the desert, or at high altitudes (10 km feet), your engine will be much hotter than even the ambient temperature. In that case, synthetic oil is the only right choice.
  • Cold climates. Synthetics are ideal in areas where temperatures can reach -10F or lower. At low temperatures, conventional oil will decompose faster than synthetic oil.
  • Extreme Driving: Running, towing, towing, or off-roading. Whenever you have a situation where your vehicle is used in heavy use (frequent stop and go, highway) synthetic oil is a great choice. These situations can put a heavy load on your engine. It’s not true that if you tow a boat occasionally, you need synthetics. However, if you regularly tow a bobcat to a construction site, it’s true for you

4. Personal Choice. There are many theories about when to use synthetic oil. Some experts recommend it for all stops, but that’s not entirely true. If you live in a city with traffic lights, the stops and trips you make are not qualified. If you’re stuck in traffic several times a day, it’s true. There is also a theory that short trips with plastic are better. This is debatable because the engine can never fully lubricate and recycle the oil. Then both oils won’t do much good anymore. The best thing you can do in this case actually drives a little longer.

There are a few different types of oil out there and one of them is a synthetic mixture. The problem with this term is that it is not regulated. This means that the synthetic mixture that you put in your vehicle can vary from shop to shop and from manufacture to manufacture. You need to look carefully at what they call a mixture. Some places list it as a mixture if it is 1% synthetic and 99% regular (not very synthetic).

Toyota’s attitude to synthetics

Toyota has these recommendations for synthetic oil:

  • Only Toyota vehicles that require 0w-20 synthetic oil (except the 2TR-FE & 3UR-FBE engines*) have been approved for extended oil change intervals of 10,000 miles/12 months. (However, you should continue to check the oil level regularly and top it up if necessary. This will help your engine take full advantage of the synthetic oil.)
  • Vehicles where 0w-20 is an option on 5w-20 mineral oil (or 5w-30) will still require 5,000 miles/6 months oil change intervals even if 0w-20 oil is used.
  • For vehicles with 10,000-mile oil change intervals, the 5,000-mile maintenance interval has not been eliminated. Traditional 5,000-mile maintenance procedures (e.g. tire rotation) will continue to be required and fluid levels (e.g. brake fluid) will need to be checked and adjusted at this time.
  • Does the vehicle operation meet the standard criteria for “Special Operating Conditions” such as: When driving off-road, on dirt roads, towing a trailer, repeated short trips at 32˚ F or extended idling, the engine oil must be changed at intervals of 5,000 miles, regardless of the type of oil used.

*The 2TR-FE (4Runner / Tacoma) and the 3UR-FBE (Flex Fuel Tundra / Sequoia) are the exceptions to this new change interval program; these engines are not currently approved for the 10,000-mile interval. An oil change interval of 5,000 miles/6 months is still required for these vehicles. The Flex Fuel 3UR-FBE also requires an interval of 2,500 miles when operated with E85.

In summary, it can be said that the decision in favor of synthetics is not in black and white. You should be careful to read and understand this choice before choosing it.

HOW DOES ENGINE OIL WORK IN A CAR?

By lubricating the engine, the oil not only keeps the engine running smoothly, but also protects it and prevents damage. This video shows the value of maintaining your vehicle with Castrol engine oil.

How often do I have to change the synthetic oil?

In a previously published blog created with the help of master technicians, we found that most modern Toyota vehicles come with the recommendation to use synthetic oil. One of the main advantages of using synthetic oil is that owners can stay longer between oil changes. If you ask yourself: “How often do I have to change synthetic oil”, we have some answers. As always, it is important to follow the factory maintenance schedule that is included in your vehicle’s owner’s manual. Best engine oil on the market

Maintenance intervals for synthetic oil

If your Toyota vehicle uses 0w-20 synthetic oil, the manufacturer has approved an oil change interval of 10,000 miles or 12 months. Vehicle owners using this type of oil should check the engine oil level regularly and top it up if necessary. This allows the synthetic oil to be most effective. It is important to note that if you are driving a Toyota Tundra or Toyota Sequoia equipped with a Flex fuel compatible engine, the 10,000-mile oil change interval has NOT been approved by Toyota.
Some engines will be tuned for operation with 5w-20 mineral oil, but can safely use 0w-20 synthetic oil. These engines will continue to require the oil change interval of 5,000 miles/six months even if the synthetic oil is used.

Other maintenance measures

Just because a vehicle has a longer oil change interval does not mean that owners can ignore the other maintenance requirements of their vehicle. Even if the oil only needs to be changed once a year or after 10,000 miles, services are required at 5,000 mile intervals. These include things like tire changes and brake inspections.

Owners who use their vehicles in adverse environments such as driving on dirt roads, off-roading, heavy towing and repeated short trips at temperatures below 32 degrees still require Toyota to maintain the 5,000 mile/six month interval. This also applies when an owner uses synthetic oil.

2021 Toyota Highlander Oil Change Service

When to Change 2021 Toyota Highlander Engine Oil

Need more info about 2021 Toyota Highlander oil changes? Get the advice you need at Firestone Complete Auto Care! We are experts in car care — not just tires. Oil and lube services are also our specialties. We couldn’t put it better than our technician, Brianna. She likes to explain to customers that, “Oil is the blood of the engine. It’s the #1 thing you can do for your car.”

Your 2021 Highlander’s oil should be changed according to Toyota’s recommended oil change intervals. Check the interval for your vehicle mileage in the table above. Outside of Toyota-recommended oil change intervals, your Highlander may need an oil change if your check engine light is on, you hear knock knock knock coming from the engine, smell oil inside the car, or see an excess amount of vehicle exhaust. You might need an oil change more frequently than what’s recommended by Toyota if you regularly haul heavy loads, drive in dusty areas, enjoy off-roading, or drive at low speeds for long distances. More frequent oil changes generally won't harm your Toyota Highlander. Each oil change is actually another chance to check and resolve other car issues, such as worn brake pads or tire treads.

What Type of Oil Does My Toyota Highlander Need?

Whether you need high mileage oil, synthetic oil, or conventional oil, you'll find the right 2021 Toyota Highlander motor oil at Firestone Complete Auto Care. Toyota has specifically identified either synthetic or conventional as the ideal engine oil for your 2021 Highlander. Motor oil helps lubricate the engine’s moving parts, keep the engine cool, and keep harmful substances from building up inside the engine. During your oil change service, one of our techs will change your Highlander’s oil, replace and recycle the old oil and filter, inspect the rest of your car’s filters, refill vital car fluids, and visually inspect the rest of the vehicle. You can drive with confidence knowing that we look out for you and your Highlander by taking into account your driving style, local climate,

Types of Motor Oil for Toyotas

Wondering if we carry the right motor oil for your Toyota? We stock outstanding motor oils because that's what your engine deserves. Talk with a teammate and consult your owner's manual before picking a motor oil. At Firestone Complete Auto Care, you can choose from the following oils: Quaker State® Advanced Durability™ conventional oil, Pennzoil® High Mileage Vehicle® motor oil, Pennzoil Platinum® Full Synthetic motor oil with PurePlus™ Technology, and Shell Rotella® heavy-duty engine oil. With so many motor oil brands in the market, why do we carry these brands? They are tested and trusted. For example, when tested in taxi fleets across North America, Quaker State was shown to provide 2x more protection than the industry standard. [1] And Pennzoil? Unlike traditional synthetic motor oils, the Pennzoil Platinum® Full Synthetic line of motor oils with PurePlus® Technology is formulated from pure natural gas, which helps lead to better performance. Then there's Shell Rotella heavy-duty engine oil. It's expressly designed for gasoline and diesel engines that need to survive the toughest working conditions, and is uniquely strengthened to deliver increased wear protection, heightened performance in extreme temperatures, and improved oxidation resistance. Always refer to Toyota's recommendations before going with a new or different motor oil for your 2021 Toyota Highlander.

[1] ILSAC GF-5 represents the latest performance standard set by the International Lubricant Standardization and Approval Committee (ILSAC), a joint effort of U.S. and Japanese automobile manufacturers. Most automobile manufacturers are expected to recommend oils that meet ILSAC GF-5. API SN is the most recent service category issued by API’s Lubricants Group. Oils meeting API SN and the new “Resource Conserving” designation meet all ILSAC GF-5 performance requirements.

2021 Toyota Highlander Oil Change Questions

  • What can low oil do to my Toyota Highlander engine? Motor oil lubricates important engine parts. If your oil reservoir is low or empty, these components can grind against each other, generate excess heat, and cause your Toyota Highlander engine to fail. That’s why you should check your oil and get it changed regularly.

  • How hard is it to change Toyota Highlander oil at home? Changing your own oil isn't as convenient as you might think. You’ll have to figure out how to properly dispose of the oil and buy special tools. Having your oil professionally changed reduces the chances of something going wrong with the oil change, but also with your vehicle down the road.

  • Why is my Toyota exhaust smoke gray or blue? There could be an oil leak and your engine is burning oil. Time to have a qualified technician check things out. The leak could be the result of worn valve seals, fried piston rings, or damaged cylinder walls.

*: The engine oil capacity is a reference quantity to be used when changing the engine oil. Warm up and turn off the engine, wait more than 5 minutes, and check the oil level on the dipstick.

 Engine oil selection

“Toyota genuine motor oil” is used in your toyota vehicle. Use toyota approved “toyota genuine motor oil” or equivalent to satisfy the following grade and viscosity.

Oil grade: ilsac gf-5 multigrade engine oil recommended viscosity: sae 0w-20 sae 0w-20 is the best choice for good fuel economy and good starting in cold weather.

If sae 0w-20 is not available, sae 5w-20 oil may be used.

However, it must be replaced with sae 0w-20 at the next oil change.

Toyota Highlander. Engine oil selection

Oil viscosity (0w-20 is explained here as an example):

  •  the 0w in 0w-20 indicates the characteristic of the oil which allows cold startability. Oils with a lower value before the w allow for easier starting of the engine in cold weather.
  • The 20 in 0w-20 indicates the viscosity characteristic of the oil when the oil is at high temperature. An oil with a higher viscosity (one with a higher value) may be better suited if the vehicle is operated at high speeds, or under extreme load conditions.

How to read oil container label: the international lubricant specification advisory committee (ilsac) certification mark is added to some oil containers to help you select the oil you should use.
