Wowweeee.  The boys’ bathroom is done and I suddenly want to ditch my bathroom and spend all my free-time in here!

Before we get into the products we used to spruce up the space, lets remember what the boys’ bathroom looked like before.

Nothing wrong with it…but just so darn bland and basic. We had been dying to ditch the builder grade vanity and mirrors and selected a new Home Decorators Collection vanity from The Home Depot (sponsored) that made designing the rest of the space a cinch! We LOVED the color of the cabinet and the fact that it came with an under-mount sink and the marble countertop with backsplash. All we had to add was the faucet and we paired it with this matte black one by Symmons that totally completed the space.

Searching for a mirror was easy, since we knew we wanted to match the matte black faucet. We landed on this one by Glass Warehouse with a rectangular black frame and the best part is that it comes with a little ledge that you can set soap or your cell phone on (not pictured). Sadly, the faucet was in the way of the ledge so we couldn’t include it here, but I think that’s a super useful option if you can fit it in your space!

Have I mentioned before how much I love that The Home Depot has literally EVERYTHING you need to outfit a space?? I found the cutest Litton Lane canisters that house things like q-tips and cotton swabs, but look adorable on a counter. Also found this cute black tumbler as well. My kids are ALWAYS needing “just one more sip of water” night. And this Nearly Natural faux olive plant is the perfect size for the counter space.

Another item that really helped us decide on color pallet for this space was the wall art by Alison Jerry that you see in the reflection of the mirror. The warm golds, white, and charcoal helped us decide on the direction we wanted to go.

Since we had so much movement with the ceiling and tile floor we went with a simple white shower curtain from Home Decorator’s Collection. You can NEVER go wrong with clean white linens in a bathroom.

Want to make your space feel like a spa and make your guests (or kids OR YOURSELF) feel like a million bucks?? (yes, please!) Add one of these bamboo caddy trays, so you can soak in style. Catch up on your latest book and relax in that tub after a long day at work. Best $24 you’ll ever spend.

This might sound silly, but I get so dang excited for fresh linens in the bathroom! Kids towels seem to get worn down pretty quickly, but these ones from Home Decorator’s Collection are the SOFTEST, most absorbent towels we have ever owned! And the new rug by The Company Store is so dang soft under our feet. I placed some in the cabinet, a few up on the towel rack, and tucked some inside that decorative basket (which came in a set of 3). With 4 boys using this bathroom, one thing they always need its EXTRA TOWELS!

The Home Decorators Collection light above the vanity is the icing on the cake! SO FUN taking this builder-grade-basic bathroom to ‘a day at the spa’ with the help of home décor options available on homedepot.com/decor! This was my digital mood board image and I think the space turned out even better than I originally envisioned.

Finding yourself stuck inside the house a lot lately? For those of you already lucky enough to be home bodies, this might not feel like a problem. If you get stir crazy in the span of fifteen minutes, though, the struggle to make peace with being stuck indoors is very real. I fall solidly into the second camp, so I’m painfully familiar with the sensation of prowling resentfully around my house, wishing to be anywhere else.

Thankfully, that is not the only way. There is absolutely a way to enjoy being home, and it starts with making your home into an oasis. Home Depot is one of our favorite places to pick up soft bedding and luxurious homegoods, since it carries tons of high-end brands for a surprisingly affordable price. We’ve put together a list of items to make your house more of a home, with an eye for the soft, warm, and comfortable.

1. A new set of dishes to make breakfast feel like a little gift to yourself

Blue dishes

Credit: Home Depot

One of the quickest, easiest ways to pamper yourself is to replace your old chipped mismatched dishes with a set you love. If you’re moved a lot or lived with roommates, you’ve likely picked up plenty of random bowls and mugs that make you go “eh.” Investing in a nice set is a way of reminding yourself that your home belongs to you, not to the ghosts of roommates past. Reviewers say this cute blue set looks great in person, and the mug is big enough to hold all the coffee you need to get through the morning.

Get the Tangiers 16-Piece Blue Dinnerware Set from Home Depot for $69.99

2. A soft new towel set, because towels shouldn’t double as exfoliators

Credit: Home Depot

When I moved into my first apartment, I owned exactly two rough, threadbare towels that were barely big enough to wrap around my body. I wish I’d been quicker to invest in some nice ones—both for my own sake, and the sake of my poor visitors. This ultra-soft set of towels will see that you’re all set when guests come to stay, but they’ll also make your day just that much softer and more luxurious.

Reviewers rave about how soft these towels are, saying they feel like the kind of thing you’d find in a luxurious hotel room. According to one reviewer, "It dries quickly during the day which is nice when you use the same towel for multiple days. Nice weave and good looking, even after washing!"

3. A multipurpose lap desk to take you from breakfast to work calls

Lap desk

There can be a fine line between enjoying a relaxed day at home, and realizing you’ve been lying in bed all day looking down your chin at your laptop propped on your chest. This classic lap desk can be a way to bridge that divide, taking you straight from breakfast in bed to work on the couch.

Reviewers say it’s durable and easy to assemble. With details like the pencil ledge and little drawer, this tray works is designed for multiuse.

Get the Espresso Lap Desk from Home Depot for $30.47

4. A bud vase to bring spring into your home

Credit: Home Depot

This sweet vase has a unique design, created to hold individual stems upright through holes in its lid. This means you don’t have to buy a new bouquet every time you want to use the vase—you can just as easily snap off a few springs from a budding tree and make a beautiful, supported display that way. Its rustic, simplistic design already has a homey charm, but this simple design tweak makes it especially easy to bring a bit of springtime inside.

Reviewer Wilhamena appreciates this, noting that they like to display just a few flowers at a time. "They are very pretty, “ Wilhamena writes. “The metal matches my bronze accents in my decor.” For pretty much any design sensibility, this vase can help freshen up a space.

5. A supportive armchair to curl up in after a hard day at the home office

Arm chair

Credit: Home Depot

I’d be remiss to talk about making your home cozier without mentioning the importance of a great comfy armchair. This chair is popular with reviewers, who love its compromise between a classic and modern design.

Reviewer Chris writes that the chair is “surprisingly lightweight, and the only assembly involves attaching the legs.” They go on to say that “the cushioning feels a bit stiff [...] but it has proven to be quite resilient and supportive—very firm and comfortable." Other buyers agree that the chair is strong and sturdy, and mention that it’s spacious enough to curl up and have storytime with kids.

6. An elegantly minimal floor lamp to brighten up any room

Floor lamp

Credit: Home Depot

No matter how cozy your house might feel, if it’s not well lit, you might wind up feeling like you’re living in a cave. I can’t stand doing battle with dimly lit spaces that don’t get enough sunshine—but if that describes your current situation, never fear. A good floor lamp might be all it takes to render your living room usable.

This tri-headed lamp offers plenty of light with a grown up design that will set it apart from cheaper-looking alternatives. Pam, one reviewer, calls it “retro chic and fun,” and notes that “the arms swing so you can arrange the lamps in any way that you like. The base is sturdy and heavy enough to easily support the 3 lamps. I had no difficulty assembling it.” She goes on to say that the arms of the lamp were a bit high for her taste out of the box, but she was able to rearrange them to the height she preferred.

7. An oil diffuser because you deserve to live somewhere that smells good

Credit: Home Depot

My oil diffuser has utterly changed my house. This is so true I actually have two now—one for the bedroom and one for the bathroom (shoutout to my two cats and their two stinky litter boxes). Diffusers are an easy way to get a little more control over the sensory experience of being home, and soothing scents can be especially nice in the evening, when you’re trying to relax and wind down.

Buyer AndyB writes, "As somebody new to aromatherapy, I was excited to find something that was stylish and functional that would look nice in my bedroom. The changing lights add a nice effect. The one area where I'd knock it is that when taking off the cover to fill with water/oil, the parts feel a bit flimsy." I would agree with Andy that the plastic on this diffuser isn’t the absolute strongest, so keep it somewhere it’s not likely to be knocked down!

Get the 3.55 fl. oz. Ultrasonic Aroma Essential Oil Diffuser with Soothing Cool Mist and LED Features from Home Depot for $28.75

8. A neutral rug you can unroll in any space

Blue rug

Credit: Home Depot

A nice rug instantly adds warmth and luxury to even the most minimal room. I’m a huge fan of classically patterned rugs like this one, which buyers love for both its neutral look and its stain resistance. Reviewer Mink says, “I like that it's not too bold or overly busy, and looks so nice. It really changed how I felt about the room. [....] I like the softness of the top, and the back isn't scratchy on my laminate wood floor." This is a great option both for warming up a hardwood floor and for layering over less attractive wall-to-wall carpeting.

9. A faux fur blanket to bring out your inner Hollywood diva

Fur blanket

Credit: Home Depot

Snuggling up under an enormous, fluffy blanket is one of my all-time favorite indulgences. We’re huge fans of weighted blankets in general, but if you’re looking for something that screams Disney villain levels of indulgence, check out this super soft faux throw that will make watching TV on the couch feel like a special event. Reviews of this throw say its incredibly soft and feels lovely, but be careful—those long fibers can get staticky!

Get the Bleached Finn Faux Fur Throw 54In. x 36In. from Home Depot for $169.99

10. A set of velvet chairs to elevate the act of taking a video call

Velvet chairs

Credit: Home Depot

I can’t be the only one who’s a sucker for velvet upholstery. If the reviews of these gorgeous chairs are anything to go by, I’m not—buyers love the pop of vibrant color in their living spaces (green is my favorite, but this set also comes in slate blue and dusty pink). You could use these as seating at a side table, at a desk or vanity, or in a reading space.

Cordelia, one buyer, says these chairs are "very comfortable,” with “good back support [...] though due to the thin legs, [they] don't slide easily across rug/carpet.” Other reviews also say the chairs look beautiful in person, but don’t be surprised if assembly takes a minute.

Get the Jordana Malachite Green/Gold Velvet Side Chair (Set of 2) from Home Depot for $394.18

11. A desk lamp to remind you that minimalism doesn’t need to be boring

Desk lamp

Credit: Home Depot

Once again, there’s nothing more important than investing in decent light sources. I love that this lamp is fairly simple, not taking up too much space with a bulky base or demanding attention, but still manages to be unique and interesting looking. The modern design of the base means it matches perfectly with a simple white shade, which means the shade will be easily replaceable if it ever falls subject to wear and tear. Reviewers say it looks even better in person, and that the gold base nicely complements other metallic details around a room, like doorknobs and dresser handles.

Get the Levi 31.5 in. Gold Leaf Metal/Crystal Table Lamp from Home Depot for $65.64

12. A cotton tablecloth to help your kitchen double as a dining room

Credit: Home Depot

Now is a great time to invest in a tablecloth. Here are some benefits to using a tablecloth: 1) it makes every meal feel a little more homey; 2) if you use your kitchen table as a work space, it’s a quick way to signify to yourself that you’re transitioning from work mode to relaxation mode; 3) you’ll be able to spruce up the table for the holidays this year!

NannaPatti writes, "I have purchased these in the past and found them to be just as good as another type I was buying. And these cost less than the other ones. Wash and dry without a problem. If there is any shrinking it’s very little." Despite NannaPatti’s reassurance, there is some disagreement amongst reviewers about whether or not the tablecloth shrinks substantially in the dryer. If you plan to heat dry, proceed with caution!

13. A set of fluffy pillows to tide you over until you can adopt another pet

Fuzzy pillow

Credit: Home Depot

Maybe you’re not ready to go full Cruella de Vil with a faux fur coat and blanket, but no matter your style, some nice cushy throw pillows can add softness and comfort to your bed or living room. Home Depot has lots of great throw pillows in stock, but in the spirit of warmth and coziness, I couldn’t resist this soft, furry set. Reviewer KV writes that "Pillows are fluffy and comfortable, exactly as described,” although many reviewers also mention that they didn’t notice the fur was only on one side until after making the purchase.

Get the Faux-Fur Light Gray Solid Faux Fur Polyester 18 in. x 18 in. Throw Pillow (Set of 2) from Home Depot for $31.86

14. A pair of sheer curtains to introduce just a little bit of privacy

Credit: Home Depot

Working from home while your neighbors do the same? You probably already know the value of a set of curtains. This particular sheer set isn’t going to block out the world, but it will add just a bit of an attractive boundary, without cutting out the sun. If you do want light-blocking drapes, you can either check out the many other great offerings on Home Depot, or add a panel under this set.

I love the airy appearance of sheer drapes, and how they make a room feel just a bit more lived-in. Kmom says, "I'm so pleased with these panels. They look elegant and expensive but seem sturdy and well made. They have a very earthy-linen look, kind of modern bohemian. But the hemstitch and texture is straight which makes them look clean, not sloppy."

Get the Hemstitch 54 in. W x 84 in. L Sheer Rod Pocket Top Curtain Panel in White (2 Panels) from Home Depot for $42.26

15. A pretty pouf to put your feet up in style

Credit: Home Depot

You know what they say: chairs are for squares! If you’re looking to park it on something a bit more comfy and casual, look no further than this cute fiber ottoman. Not only is it versatile (you can put your feet on it too!), it’s stylish and unobtrusive, so it goes with just about any kind of existing decor.

Reviewer Sarah says, “Very sturdy. Nice color—I would call it a beige with silver threads intertwining. Overall a good buy. A little small but you can’t beat the price.” It sounds like this pouf is pretty firm, so don’t add it to your cart expecting a bean bag!

Nothing feels better than wrapping yourself up in a cozy towel after you get out of the tub or shower. If your towel is feeling rough or isn't drying you off quickly, chances are it's time for an upgrade. The problem is there are so many bath towels to choose from at a wide range of price points, so it's not exactly easy to shop for bath towels, especially when you're unsure of how they'll hold up over time.

The Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab evaluated over 40 towel styles for absorbency, drying time, washability, fabric strength, and more using our in-lab equipment. We then had dozens of real consumer testers blindly rate the fabrics for softness and feel after one wash and again after 20 washes. The picks ahead are top performers from our test and have become favorites for our staffers. Before we dive in to our top picks, here are some things to keep in mind when you shop.

How to find your best bath towel

Towel shopping is largely based on your personal preference.

  • If you want a super soft, ultra-absorbent towel, look for 100% cotton with dense, plush loops of yarn on the surface. You can also look at fabric weight, which is shown in GSM. Over 600 GSM is considered heavy, so these will typically be the most plush. Lighter towels like waffle weaves or ribs weren't typically as soft in our test.
  • If you want a towel that's quick-drying and more durable, consider a cotton-poly blend or a lighter fabric with a low pile (short loops). Fluffy loops help the towel feel soft and absorb water, but they can take longer to dry and may show more wear from laundering.

Are Turkish or Egyptian cotton towels better?

It’s not a rule of thumb, but towels labeled as “Turkish cotton” or “Made in Turkey” performed better in our tests than those claiming to be made of “Egyptian” cotton. In theory, they’re very similar: Both are long-staple fibers, helping to make the fabrics softer and more durable. However, Turkish cotton is more popular in bath towels and known for drying faster than Egyptian cotton.

How do you stop towels from shedding fluff?

Wash them before use! Sometimes there are loose fibers leftover from the production process, but laundering the towels a few times should help get rid of them. Pro tip: Washing them also makes them more absorbent because it gets rid of leftover finishes from production.

Here are the best bath towels to buy in 2021:

Best Overall Bath Towel

Hydrocotton Quick-Dry Towels
Pottery Barnpotterybarn.com

These 100% organic cotton towels earned the highest overall score in our test and stood out for being super soft and ultra absorbent. Though the name claims these towels are quick drying, they still took longer to dry than other not as plush towels in our test. If you're looking for a top notch towel that will last, this one looked and felt great even after 20 wash cycles.

  • Super soft, plush, and absorbent
  • Held up to 20 wash cycles

Best Value Bath Towel

Performance 5.0 Bath Towel
Southern Tideamazon.com

With good scores across the board for absorbency, drying speed, softness, and fabric strength, these towels overall beat out styles that were much more expensive. The 92% cotton, 8% polyester towels weren't the best in any specific test, but the performance was still impressive. That said, some consumer testers called the towel just "average" and "generic" when feeling it next to others in a blinded comparison.

  • Good scores for absorbency, dry time, softness, and strength
  • Budget-friendly yet beat out pricier brands
  • Some testers called them "average"

Best Quick Dry Bath Towel

Diamond Jacquard Bath Towel Set

This editor-favorite towel has a unique construction of cotton on the outside so you feel softness, but microfiber on the inside for enhanced performance. The result makes it absorbent, quick drying, strong, and shrink-resistant. The fabric surface showed fuzzy signs of wear faster than others in our laundering evaluations, but it was a top performer and the only towel to ace both absorbency and drying time tests. You can also buy it in a 6-piece set to include hand and face towels.

  • Cotton and microfiber blend for a plush feel and fast dry time
  • Aced absorbency and drying time tests
  • Available in a set
  • Showed signs of wear in laundry evaluations

Best Heavyweight Bath Towel

Super-Plush Bath Towel Set

The heaviest of all the towels in our roundup, this 100% cotton set is incredibly soft and absorbent. The thick fabric may feel too heavy for some, and its plush cotton surface takes longer to dry, but it's a great choice for anyone that wants a thick, fluffy towel. Even better, Brooklinen offers free returns for a year if you don't love it.

  • Thick, fluffy, and soft
  • Heaviest towel we tested
  • Free returns for one year
  • Plush cotton takes longer to dry

Best Lightweight Bath Towel

Waffle Bath Towel

The waffle weave construction on this 100% cotton towel is super light and dries quickly. It won't dry you off as fast as plush towels with loops: In fact, this one had the lowest absorbency score in our test. The trade-off is that it's not bulky like a traditional towel with loops. If you're looking for one that's more plush, the brand's Classic Towel was highly absorbent and an overall great pick.

  • Lightweight and quick-drying
  • Thin and not bulky

Most Absorbent Bath Towel

Ultra-Soft Turkish Bath Towel

Our panel loved the feel and gave these towels the highest rating in a blind comparison. In the Lab, the 100% cotton towels were by far the most absorbent. On the flip side, they took a while to dry and shrunk a bit in our wash test. If you want to wrap yourself in a thick, plush towel, this is the one for you.

  • Top absorbency scores in Lab tests
  • Thick and fluffy

Best RIbbed Bath Towel

Rib Hydrocotton Towels
The White Companythewhitecompany.com

These towels held up to washing in hot water, which is more effective at killing germs and bacteria, and the 100% cotton fabric was also soft and absorbent. Keep in mind that the towel size was slightly smaller than others in our assortment, but if you're looking for towels with texture, this outperformed all other ribbed styles.

  • Soft, absorbent cotton
  • Hot water wash-safe for killing germs and bacteria
  • Textured design
  • Slightly smaller than standard sizing

Best Low Pile Bath Towel

Legend Bath Towel

This towel was absorbent despite not having super-plush loops of yarn on the surface, which also helped it dry quickly and look good after laundering. Consumer testers didn't rate it as soft as other styles, but this 100% cotton towel is ideal for those who don't like overly-fluffy fabric.

  • Absorbent and quick-drying
  • Less fluffy than other picks
  • Looks great after repeated laundering

Best Organic Bath Towel

Plush Bath Towel
Boll & Branchbollandbranch.com

This 100% organic cotton towel is organic and Fair Trade Certified so you know it's responsibly and ethically sourced. On top of that, it was super absorbent and overall durable in our evaluations. It's the most expensive in our roundup and it didn't dry as fast as other fabrics, but hundreds of reviewers sing its praises online, and it performed better than other organic options in our test.

  • Fair Trade Certified
  • Absorbent and durable
  • Pricey and not as fast-drying as other picks

Best Bath Towel Set

Plush Soft Cotton 18-Piece Towel Set
Home Decorators Collectionhomedepot.com

The fabric on this  100% cotton towel set feels soft and has incredible absorbency. It earned the Good Housekeeping Seal, meaning it underwent thorough evaluations and is covered by our limited warranty. There was some shrinkage in laundering evaluations, but if you have a large family or need to buy a large quantity of towels to fill a home, the set comes with six bath towels, six hand towels and six washcloths for a great price. It's also available in 6-piece and 12-piece sets.

  • Soft and incredibly absorbent
  • GH Seal-holder
  • Affordably priced
  • Shrinks a bit in the wash

Five Best & Five Worst Things to Buy at Home Depot

Looking for the best deals before your next trip to the big orange hardware store? We’ve identified some of the best products that you can find on sale at Home Depot as well as some of the worst that you will want to avoid. These picks are based on average discounts as well as the potential for additional coupons used in the transaction.

Home Depot’s Five Best

1. Lights (LED bulbs and string lights)

At Ben’s, we see the most (and best!) deals on LED light bulbs coming from Home Depot than any other store. The best prices are on multi-packs. They also have great deals on holiday string lights, especially when you factor in their annual Christmas Light Trade-In promo.

The store typically gives out coupons for new lights when you bring in your old string lights–usually starts the first week in November and lasts a week or two.

2. Tool combo kits

Home Depot doesn’t necessarily have the best prices on single tools, but they often have very good sales on multiple-piece power tool combo kits, specifically from brands like Ryobi and Milwaukee.

home-depot-power tools1

We see these deals throughout the year but they’re especially good during Home Depot’s “Spring Black Friday” sale in April, as well as around the holidays. They’re also often featured as the “Daily Deal” (a new one starts every morning and lasts for 24 hours).

3. Grills and other patio items

Home Depot has some great prices on grills, both on lower-end brands like Char-Broil and higher-end brands like Vision Grills. They usually offer a really special deal or two during or around their Spring Black Friday Sale in April–last year it was a Dyna-Glo 6-Burner Stainless Steel Gas Grill for $199.

Along with grills, Home Depot has nice deals on patio furniture, specifically their Hampton Bay brand. Look for aggressive sales in early spring and again at the end of the season.

4. Paint

Home Depot’s Behr brand of paint is generally very well-reviewed and a good value compared to other premium paint brands. Since it’s sold only at Home Depot they often have specials on it.

You can also get a good deal by looking at their “mis-tint” paint (only of course, if you don’t have a specific color you need to match). They also almost always have a $5 off $50 purchase text coupon available that stacks with sale prices.

5. Gardening supplies

Home Depot often runs sales on things like mulch, soil, garden beds, and other gardening supplies. To kick off the spring season they usually have bags of mulch for $2, as well as other aggressive deals on this type of stuff.

Home Depot’s Five Worst

1. Home decor / Wall Art

The decor items you’ll find at Home Depot are generally overpriced and you can find similar items for cheaper at places like IKEA, Target or even TJ Maxx Home Goods.

In general, Home Depot is great for DIY project supplies but not so much for just picking up already put together items like home decor.

2. Appliances

Every now and then we see a nice refrigerator or oven deal pop up from Home Depot, but the better deals mostly come from retailers like Best Buy. That includes discounts for opening a store credit card as well.

3. Kitchen / Grilling accessories

The pots and pans Home Depot sells are generally not the best quality and they’re definitely not the best price. Look to stores like Kohl’s and Macy’s for deals on high quality sets, especially during November.

Same goes for grilling accessories which are priced high for the convenience factor of being able to pick them up along with the new grill you just bought.

4. Batteries

Another product category that is priced quite high for the convenience factor of picking up batteries in bulk. You can find much better deals on batteries elsewhere, specifically dollar stores and other large retail chains.

 5. Cleaning Supplies

The volume of cleaning supplies offered by Home Depot is somewhat low and priced much higher than retailers like Target and Walmart. That goes for both conventional household cleaners as well as more aggressive cleaners like Goo Gone.

The same advice goes for Home Depot’s internal brand ‘HDX paper towels’. However that’s a comment on the quality, not the pricing. You are better off going with Bounty or another brand that’s more absorbent.
