Super Saiyan

Sūpā Saiya-jin

Super Saiyan (サイヤ,Sūpā Saiya-jin, lit. Super Saiyan Person) is an advanced transformation assumed by members and hybrids of the Saiyan race with sufficient amounts of S-Cells in the Dragon Ball franchise. Earthlings (of Saiyan heritage) in Dragon Ball Online can also assume the transformation by wishing to have their dormant Saiyan powers unlocked.

The Super Saiyan form first premiered in April 1991, within chapter 317 of the Dragon Ball manga, entitled "Life or Death". It also made its anime debut in 1991, first appearing in Dragon Ball Z episode 95, "Transformed at Last". Within Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball Super, three further powered up transformations: the second[16][17] and third[18][19] forms succeed Super Saiyan, while the premier form also has two additionalgraded states[20] that focus on power, and also the final form[21][22] which is superior to the graded forms. The original Super Saiyan form can also be mastered[23] to improve some of its traits and remove some flaws.

The ability to become a Super Saiyan was once considered to be nothing but a legend, as it had not been performed for over one thousand years.[24]Vegeta stated that a Super Saiyan has achieved a level of power so overwhelming that it could only be maintained in a transformed state. Despite only being told through legend, Frieza, who had Saiyans in his army, became paranoid over the possibility of truth behind the legend due to the constantly growing power of the Saiyan race. After receiving informal permission from the God of DestructionBeerus, Frieza finally decided to annihilate the Saiyan race by destroying Planet Vegeta,[25] thus apparently sparking the end of the Super Saiyan legend. However, twenty-five years later, the Super Saiyan legend was proven true when Goku accomplished the feat during his titanic battle with Frieza.[26]

It was originally believed that the Super Saiyan transformation comes in response to a need, not a desire.[27] Any Saiyan can become a Super Saiyan, however, they require a large amount of S-Cells in order to take on the form, Saiyans who have a gentle spirit gain more S-Cells, but when a Saiyan increases their battle power, they steadily gain more S-Cells. Once the Saiyan has enough S-Cells, a feeling such as strong anger or sadness can transform a Saiyan into a Super Saiyan,[28][29][30] once a Saiyan has achieved the form they can transform into it any time by focusing their energy into their back to make it tingle. A Saiyan who has a very large battle power can turn Super Saiyan without needing a trigger, due to their tremendous amount of S-Cells. Saiyan offspring will inherit S-Cells from their parents. This is why Goten, Trunks and the hybrid clone Cell were able to become Super Saiyans so easily.

Goku achieves the form out of anger over the murder of his best friend Krillin, and in a what-if scenario Bardock achieves the form out of anger after Chilled attacked a Plant child called Berry, while Vegeta achieves the form through sheer frustration at his original inability to achieve it, especially when Goku already had.[31] While training in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, Goku informs Gohan that becoming a Super Saiyan is powered by rage and told him to imagine Cell and then Frieza (after Gohan stated he had never seen Cell) killing all his friends in order for him to transform into a Super Saiyan. As the Saiyans train during Dragon Ball Z, they discover uncharted levels beyond the first Super Saiyan level. The power increases of subsequent Super Saiyan forms are so high that by the Buu Saga, the original transformation has been literally reduced to a "child's plaything" (as stated by Vegeta, as both Goten and Trunks can transform and harness the power adeptly at such a young age).[32]

No female Super Saiyans were seen in the Dragon Ball manga or anime until Caulifla achieved the transformation in Dragon Ball Super.

However, the Dragon Ball GT: Perfect File states that Pan and Bulla have the potential to transform if the right conditions are met and that they may transform if the evilest of dangers appears. Also stating that Pan might become a type of Super Saiyan never seen before.[citation needed] Female Super Saiyans have since appeared in video games, including Dragon Ball Online, Dragon Ball Heroes and Dragon Ball Xenoverse.

In Dragon Ball Super, while explaining Goku's Super Saiyan form to Beerus as they were watching parts of Goku's battle with Frieza, Whis mentions that the Saiyan's knowledge of the form was lost to their race at some point in the past, resulting in it being viewed by most Saiyans as little more than a legend until it was rediscovered by Goku and the surviving Saiyans. The Namekian Grand Elder Guru also showed some awareness of the existence of Super Saiyans when he mistakenly thought that the Nameless Namekian had been killed by a Saiyan while speaking to Krillin about Kami and Piccolo's deaths, unaware of their split until after he probed Krillin's mind. Guru implied that only a Super Saiyan would have the power to kill a Super Namekian like the Nameless Namekian. This indicates that Namekians may have encountered Super Saiyans in the distant past or had heard about them during the time the Namekian people were an interstellar race, as Guru possessed knowledge of them and the legend concerning the Original Super Saiyan God recorded in the Namekian Book of Legends.

In Dragon Ball GT, Old Kai was shown to be aware of both the Golden Great Ape and Super Saiyan 4 forms which are only accessible to Saiyans who have achieved the Super Saiyan form yet also capable of transforming into a Great Ape, indicating that Super Saiyans, Golden Great Apes, and Super Saiyan 4 had previously existed at some point in the past for Old Kai to possess knowledge of those transformations.

In the Dragon Ball Super manga, it is shown that when a Super Saiyan's power surpasses the power of the Super Saiyan God form, it will naturally progress into a Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan.

Akira Toriyama stated in the Saikyō Jump's June 2014 interview that Goku realized mastering his normal state and Super Saiyan would raise his level more and sap less strength than Super Saiyan 2 and Super Saiyan 3. This was eventually displayed in the story through the God-like Saiyan and Super Saiyan Blue states in Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’ and the Dragon Ball Super series.

Concept and Creation

The concept of a "Super Saiyan" was first referenced by Nappa in "The Needs of the Many", as a term for the power hypothetical Saiyan-Earthling hybrids would wield. The concept of the Super Saiyan warrior of legend was eventually introduced as a major plot point in "The Dragon Balls Change Hands".

The Super Saiyan from a 1000 years prior to the Frieza Saga - Yamoshi - first appeared in a filler visual in "Goku's New Power", well before the debut of the Super Saiyan form proper. Here Yamoshi was depicted using a Golden Great Ape form.

The initial incarnation of the Super Saiyan form was created by Toei Animation and used in the movie Dragon Ball Z: Lord Slug, however this was later retconned into being the Pseudo Super Saiyan form after the debut of the real Super Saiyan state in the manga.

The primary reason why Akira Toriyama created the Super Saiyan state with blond hair was so that his assistant would no longer have to spend so much time coloring Goku's hair black - thus saving time. Due to also having the effect of making Goku appear stronger, it killed two birds with one stone.[33]

Goku's Super Saiyan form was heavily influenced by the martial artist Bruce Lee. According to Toriyama, Goku's piercing eyes were based on Lee's paralyzing glare.[34]Dragon Ball Z anime character designer Tadayoshi Yamamuro also used Lee as a reference for Goku's Super Saiyan form, stating that, when he "first becomes a Super Saiyan, his slanting pose with that scowling look in his eyes is all Bruce Lee."[35]

The Super Saiyan Form

"The power comes in response to a need, not a desire"
— Goku in "Bow to the Prince"

The first Super Saiyan transformation occurs when a Saiyan who has reached a very high level of power loses himself in a fit of rage.[28] It can be achieved by any Saiyan who has a high battle power above the standard level.[28] However, in the anime the transformation must be triggered in response to a great need, an example being in Goku's case to defeat Frieza. Intense rage may not be the actual or only source, but merely a focuser, as Goten proved able to obtain his form instinctively. To which, in Dragon Ball Super, Cabba described the process of as experiencing a tingling sensation of focusing one's energy emanating from the user's back (seemingly centered in a point along the spine) between the shoulder blades, Caulifla simply followed these instructions to transform into the state.

The transformation has a noticeable effect on the Saiyan's personality. Any Saiyan that had previously demonstrated a calm, collected, laid back, kind and even peaceful demeanor becomes ruthless, overcome with rage, impulsive, even becoming noticeably vengeful and unusually violent; and any Saiyan that had demonstrated those traits previously will only have them amplified to a greater degree. This is first demonstrated when Goku turned Super Saiyan during his battle against Frieza where when he went from a calm, collected, fighter to becoming a vengeful warrior, hellbent on avenging his fallen friend, Krillin, even at his own peril.

Later on, when Vegeta became a Super Saiyan, he became even more rash and belligerent, and became obsessed with defeating the Androids by himself, a drastic change from his smart, covert style he demonstrated in the Vegeta and Namek Sagas. Gohan becomes a Super Saiyan, while training in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, but manages to regain control of his emotions prior to leaving the Chamber. However, the amplified anger that a Super Saiyan experiences returned when he became a Super Saiyan 2.

The personality alterations are also on display in Dragon Ball GT: A Hero's Legacy when Goku Jr., a timid boy with no will to fight even in self-defense, saw Lord Yao terrorize the forest and became a Super Saiyan, his personality came full circle, accordingly. However, if the Saiyan used the secondary method of transforming mentioned far above (as demonstrated by Caulifla) by concentrating ki to their backs between the shoulders, the Super Saiyan's personality will remain unchanged without the need of additional training. (Suggesting the Super Saiyan form is may be inherently physical as opposed to psychological.)

The most noticeable physical change is that the Saiyan's hair becomes golden blond in color and seems to stand on end, giving it a rising, flame-like appearance. This applies to all of the Saiyan's hair except (in most cases) the tail, including scalp hair, eyebrows, and the fur when a Golden Great Apes. Natural eye color changes to a greenish-blue, muscle tone becomes more defined, and the skin tone (and clothing) becomes lighter mainly due to the energy and light output of the golden aura. As the natural floodgates of the body are opened with the transformation, excess energy is radiated from the body in the form of a pulsing, flame-like aura. There is also a marked personality alteration, where the Saiyan becomes unusually aggressive and more prone to acting on impulse. It can be noted that in Dragon Ball Online, in the event a Saiyan character is bald they will gain a mohawk of golden hair when they turn Super Saiyan.

The Super Saiyan transformation also has an interesting, unique effect on Goku's family in addition to its normal effects: the way their eyes are drawn changes slightly. Normally, the outline around the eye is not fully drawn and it circles around about 3/4 of the way the eyeball while the overall shape of the eyes are rounder. When in Super Saiyan, their eyes are fully surrounded by an outline and are sharper and narrow in shape, the same way that all villains are drawn; this is mainly due to Akira Toriyama wanting to show the anger and hatred that must be present for a Super Saiyan transformation.

It is theorized by Krillin that the Super Saiyan transformation prevents Goku from performing his Spirit Bomb technique.[36] One must be pure of heart to perform the Spirit Bomb technique, and as a Super Saiyan, Goku's heart is full of rage, although not necessarily contaminated by evil. In the film Dragon Ball Z: Super Android 13!, when Goku becomes a Super Saiyan after gathering power for his Spirit Bomb, he loses control of the energy and instead absorbs it into his own body.

When a Super Saiyan achieves an extremely high level of power, they will exhibit sparks around their aura (like a Super Saiyan 2), this has only been displayed by Vegito, Goku Black and the Warrior in Black Clothes.

Super Saiyans from evil hybrid races will sometimes exhibit white hair. Examples of this include Fused Zamasu in his Super Saiyan Rosé form in Dragon Ball Super, Vegeta's Super Saiyan form and Strongest Forms when his body was infected by the TuffleBaby in Dragon Ball GT, as well as Mira's own uniquetransformations as his identity as a hybrid Saiyan in Xenoverse 2 and Heroes. However, it has never been stated in any Dragon Ball media (anime, manga, video games, etc.) that the reason these Saiyan hybrids have white hair in their Super Saiyan forms is due to them being evil Saiyan hybrids.

Usage and Power

While physical change is not too drastic apart from a slight increase in muscle mass,[37][38] the power output increase is colossal; it was stated by Akira Toriyama that when he was writing the manga the form was meant to be 10x what Goku had previously accomplished, in Daizenshuu 7 the form is said to multiply the Saiyan's power level by 50x times its normal amount,[28] which Toriyama considers to be an exaggeration.[39] In the Dragon Ball Z: The Anime Adventure Game, the multiplier for the form is 2.5x the user's normal amount of power). The form's multiplier seems to have changed in Dragon Ball GT, When Goku utilizes the Super Saiyan form against General Rilldo, the Machine Mutant indicates that Goku's power has increased to just over double his base form (in the English dub he states that it has increased a hundredfold),[40] and the 50x power boost mentioned in prior guidebooks is said to simply be a theory.[41]

The form was achieved by Goku after witnessing his best friend Krillin's death at the hands of Frieza. In this form, Goku's power grossly outclasses the evil tyrant's, a feat made more impressive by the fact that, prior to the transformation, Goku was no match for him, even with the Kaio-ken multiplying his power 20-fold. This suggests the transformation multiplies the user's power by considerably more than 20. In order to combat Goku's sudden burst of strength and power, Frieza utilized 100% of his power, only half of which he used to stop Goku's Kaio-ken x20 Kamehameha attack. Though he seemed to gain the upper hand while Goku holds back, he loses faith when he realizes that his attacks are no longer debilitating, with Goku merely shrugging off his most forceful blows. This is evident, because, in his 100% final state, Frieza had gained power and speed, but also gained increased energy consumption to the point where his damaged body could no longer handle the amount of power he was controlling.

Two years following the titanic battle on Namek, Future Trunks would arrive from the future already possessing the ability to transform, much to the astonishment of Vegeta and other present company, and effortlessly disposed of the synthetically restoredFrieza, and his father, King Cold.[42] Sometime later, Vegeta also achieves the Super Saiyan transformation, mainly due to his belief that he had pushed himself to his utmost limits without actually transforming and due to seeing that Goku had achieved the form whilst he did not. By his own admission, it was anger at himself that triggered the intense emotion required to transform. He also noted, that he too possessed a pure heart, only one of pure evil as opposed to Goku's good. With this new power under his belt, Vegeta confronts and overcomes Android 19 and Dr. Gero, blithely killing #19 with the powerful Big Bang Attack.[43]

However, the Super Saiyan form is truly put to the test when the true Androids of Future Trunks' grim prediction, Android 17 and Android 18, arrive. Super Saiyan Vegeta does battle with Android 18 until he is eventually overpowered and even has his arm snapped by a fierce kick from the deadly beauty.[44] Future Trunks jumps in on the battle, prompting #17 to intervene. The Androids easily defeat both Vegeta and Future Trunks in their Super Saiyan forms along with the other Z Fighters; Future Trunks, in particular, being felled by a single blow from #17, as opposed to the trained Vegeta who withstood a much longer beating, signifying his superior strength.[45] This power is noted by Kami as he brings up the topic of how Vegeta is now more powerful than Future Trunks, who "killed Frieza and his father in an instant."

The limits of the Super Saiyan transformation were pushed even further with the introduction of Cell. With the basic Super Saiyan form now unable to combat the power of the Androids, Goku advises training in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber because he believes that there is a way to ascend past the normal limitations of an untrained Super Saiyan, and doing so would make them strong enough to take down the Androids. By the time Cell had reached his Perfect Form after absorbing both the Androids, Vegeta, Future Trunks, Goku, and Gohan had all spent time in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, advancing to new Super Saiyan forms. The Super Saiyan's standard output of power would be outclassed by the second and third stages. Unlike Vegeta and Future Trunks who made use of these stages (which either consumes one's energy rapidly and produces an increasingly higher level of strain, or reduces the Saiyan's speed to nil, with the latter doing both), Goku and Gohan work to perfect the initial transformation after deciding that it was the best form to use overall, prompting their transition into Super Saiyan Full Power, the concept of making the Super Saiyan form no different in energy output and strain than the basic form of the user's body. The initial transformation and its advanced grades are later rendered obsolete by the introduction of a far more powerful level, Super Saiyan 2 (which is the form used by Gohan to defeat Cell), followed by Goku's introduction of Super Saiyan 3 during the Majin Buu Saga, and finally, Super Saiyan Rage, introduced in the Dragon Ball Super anime. Super Saiyan 2, Super Saiyan 3 and Super Saiyan Rage are nothing more than powered-up variations of Super Saiyan.[46]

Dragon Ball: All The Super Saiyan Levels Ranked, Weakest To Strongest

What's in a power level, anyway? If it's over 9000, does that even still really mean anything? Maybe not, but each time a Dragon Ballcharacter reaches a new level of power, it tends to come with a snazzy new look. That's part of the reason fans keep returning to the franchise after so many years.

No race in Dragon Ball has earned as many power ups as the Saiyans. The warrior race was bred for fighting and conquering, and it shows. Though Goku was the first one to reach the level of Super Saiyan, many other Saiyans (and Saiyan-like beings) have reached higher and more powerful levels throughout the series' storied history.

Beings like Cell and Zamasu have been able to cheat their way into Super Saiyan like transformations. On the other hand, Goku has been able to push his body to Godlike limits that Saiyans were never meant to reach. Vegeta's managed it too, but Goku tends to do it first.

Through Dragon Ball Z, Dragon Ball GT and most recently Dragon Ball Super, the Saiyans who remain alive have displayed an enormous number of these transformations. They usually happen during some kind of state of emotional stress, but as the Saiyans from Universe 6 have shown us, sometimes they just do it because they want to.

Let's take a look at Dragon Ball: Every Level Of Super Saiyan Ranked.

17 False Super Saiyan

Whether this first one is true canon or not is debatable. It first happened during the film Lord Slug. The eponymous villain shows up on Earth looking for trouble. He's quickly confronted by the Z fighters, who are easily dispatched. Even Goku has a hard time with Slug until he manages this power boost.

In this form Goku's hair didn't turn yellow, but his pupils disappeared and his aura gained a gold tinge. He also received a huge power boost, although he wasn't able to maintain it for very long.

Technically, Goku was the only one who reached this bench mark, though Vegeta has shown off a technique that is similar. Against both Goku and Frieza, Vegeta used a technique called Saiyan Soul, which greatly resembles Goku's transformation against Lord Slug.

16 Super Saiyan

Every Dragon Ball fan remembers watching Goku transform into a Super Saiyan for the first time. A Saiyan is able to achieve this this state through a combination of intense training and an extreme emotional reaction. For Goku, it was watching his best friend be destroyed. For Vegeta, it was the anger that both Goku and Trunks had beaten him to it.

In this form, the major difference is the Saiyan's hair.

It stands up straight and turns completely yellow. The Saiyan also displays a golden aura, which Akira Toriyama designed to make Goku easier to animate.

Toriyama recently revealed that not all Saiyans are capable of achieving the transformation. They may train all their lives, but if they don't posses the right amount of S cells in their body they will never succeed. Almost every living Saiyan in universe 7 is capable of doing this.

15 Super Saiyan Second Grade

These next two cause a bit of confusion among casual fans. Super Saiyan Second grade, also known as Ascended Super Saiyan, is extremely similar to the base Super Saiyan form. The primary differences are that the muscles grow a little bigger and the hair gets a little bit longer and wilder.

Once the the Super Saiyan transformation is achieved, a Saiyan can reach this upgrade through strong training. Vegeta, Trunks, and Goku were all able to reach this form through extended periods in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber.

The form increases both the strength and the speed of the user beyond the Super Saiyan level.

Vegeta was easily able to over power Semi-Perfect Cell while using this technique.

14 Super Saiyan Third Grade

This form is a bit of a wild card. Also known as the Ultra Super Saiyan or the Super Saiyan 1.5, the Super Saiyan Third Grade Transformation is the last one between the original form and Super Saiyan 2. It is similar to the Super Saiyan Second Grade - with a few key differences.

In this form, a Saiyan's power level increases immensely. Their muscles grow huge and their already spiky hair grows even bigger and shoots out in all kinds of different directions.

Unlike the previous transformation, speed is greatly reduced due to the increased muscle mass.

Goku, Vegeta, Trunks, and more recently Caulifla were all able to achieve this form. Due to the Saiyan cells in his DNA, Cell was also able to achieve it. Cell, Goku, and Vegeta all immediately recognized the downside of this technique. It took Trunks a little longer.

13 Super Saiyan Full Power

After Goku reached Super Saiyan Third Grade, he came to an important conclusion: the original Super Saiyan form is the most practical. It consumes less energy than either of the two superior forms and there is less rage involved, keeping the user more level-headed.

Goku decided that he and Gohan would remain in Super Saiyan form permanently right up until the battle with Cell. This way, their bodies would become accustomed to the power and it wouldn't drain them. They would also be able to control their rage.

This gave birth to the Super Saiyan Full Power.

It's the same as the regular Super Saiyan form, but with none of the emotional turmoil.

When Goku powers up in this form, he displays a power level that none of the other Z fighters had even imagined yet.

12 Super Saiyan 2

The Cell saga was full of all kinds of new Super Saiyan transformations. None of them made the kind of impact that this one made, though.

Poor Gohan never wanted to fight. He was pushed to his limits by his father and then forced to watch his friends tortured, all so that Cell could witness his ultimate power.

Gohan did not disappoint. In this form, Gohan's initially short hair spiked and grew extremely tall. It was also much sharper and more defined. His aura maintained a small amount of lightning around it, and his strength and speed significantly increased.

Because of the sheer power, his personality also changed slightly.

He became confident to a fault, which allowed Cell to briefly gain the upper hand. Goku, Vegeta and Trunks have all reached this level, as well as Kale and Caulifla more recently.

11 Legendary Super Saiyan

The legends started here. Stories told of a Saiyan who was able to reach this transformation and attain unimaginable power. These stories were what led Frieza to fear the Saiyan race to the point of mass extinction. It has a few key differences from the regular Super Saiyan transformation.

Like Super Saiyan Second and Third Grade, the saiyan's muscles grow much larger. However, in this form their speed is not at all affected. Their hair also gains a green tinge as opposed to the original yellow, and their eyes become white without pupils.

At first, the only Saiyan to reach this level was Broly in Broly - The Legendary Super Saiyan. The transformation was recently made canon when the timid Universe 6 saiyan Kale achieved the Legendary Super Saiyan form. It is difficult to control, but possesses a raw power that is stronger than Super Saiyan 2.

10 Super Saiyan 3

So far only two Saiyans have been displayed the Super Saiyan 3 form. The first was obviously Goku. He used it against Buu, in a what came off as a lecture on Super Saiyan transformations. The second was Gotenks, who just kind of figured it out on the fly.

This form is drastically different from the first few. For one, the Saiyan's blond hair grows huge and falls behind their back. They also lose their eyebrows entirely, which makes for a more menacing look.

Both Goku and Gotenks were able to easily overpower Buu in this form.

The downside is that it requires a huge amount of energy and therefore can't be maintained for very long. The first time Goku used it he was lifeless and so he was able to fight without the adverse effects.

9 Golden Great Ape

Let's jump into Dragon Ball GT for a second. All Saiyans are born with monkey-like tails. When they look at the moon (or other spherical planets) while their tails are still attached, they transform into a giant ape known as Oozaru.

When a Saiyan who has achieved the Super Saiyan transformation turns into Oozaru, they reach the Golden Great Ape form. The form resembles Oozaru in every way except that the fur is gold instead of brown. It is also obviously much stronger, surpassing even the power of a Super Saiyan 3.

The level of control over this form varies depending on the situation.

Goku was not able to control himself while in this form, but Vegeta - while under the influence of Baby - was able to maintain some semblance of control. Some Saiyans also partially maintain their clothing.

8 Super Saiyan 4

Super Saiyan 4 was the final Super Saiyan transformation for a very long time.

It is achieved when a Saiyan manages to gain full mental control while in the Golden Great Ape form. It wasn't designed by Akira Toriyama, although he did have some say toward the final look.

In this form, the Saiyan's hair returns to its original black color, and grows down around the shoulders.

In keeping with the monkey theme, the Saiyan also grows red fur all around their body with the exception of the chest. The Saiyan also gains red outline around their eyes.

Only two (and a half) Saiyans have achieved this transformation. Goku and Vegeta both reached it in GT, and their fused form Gogeta was also able to achieve the transformation. It is widely considered to be ten times stronger than Super Saiyan 3.

7 Super Saiyan Rage

Just when you thought Dragon Ball couldn't get any more confusing, Dragon Ball Super went and introduced Super Saiyan Rage. Also known as Super Saiyan Anger, this transformation seemingly came out of nowhere. It was only used by Trunks during the struggle against Zamasu.

Think of this form as Super Saiyan 2 Ascended.

It takes Super Saiyan 2's power and multiplies it. The Saiyan's hair grows slightly longer and they gain a blue tinge within their golden aura. This means that it may include a slight elevation to God Ki.

In this form, Trunks was able to go toe to toe with Goku Black in his Super Saiyan Rose form. Much like Goku's spirit bomb technique, Trunks was able to gather energy from the remaining humans in his time in order to defeat Future Zamasu. He cut him in half with his sword, because Trunks still has the coolest moves in the entire franchise.

6 Super Saiyan God

The Super Saiyan God form came to Beerus in a dream, much in the same way it probably came to the Dragon Ball Super writers. He awoke and went on a quest to find this legendary transformation, eventually landing on Earth and finding Goku.

Goku was able to reach this level through a ritual involving five other Saiyans who were pure of heart. In this form, his hair returns to its normal form. Instead of being pure black, his hair and eyes gain a red tinge.

In this form, a Saiyan has access to God Ki and their anatomy is irrevocably altered.

While it was never shown on screen, Vegeta was presumably also able to reach this level through intense training with Beerus and Whis. While he wasn't able to defeat Beerus, Goku was able to go toe to toe with the God of Destruction while in his Super Saiyan God form.

5 Super Saiyan Blue

What happens when a Super Saiyan God turns into a Super Saiyan? Obviously, you get a Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan. That was a bit of a mouthful, though, so the creators simplified the name to Super Saiyan Blue.

When a Saiyan achieves the Super Saiyan God form, their body is irreversibly altered.

The form resembles Super Saiyan entirely except for the fact that all of the gold is replaced with blue. Could you guess that from the name?

Goku and Vegeta are both able to achieve this form, and while its power is extremely draining on a Saiyan's body, they've both trained enough that they were able to outclass Frieza in his newly attained Golden Frieza form. Their fusion transformation Vegito can also use the technique, as shown against Zamasu.

4 Super Saiyan Rose

When a God achieves the Super Saiyan God form and then turns into a Super Saiyan Blur, they actually turn into a Super Saiyan Rose. Still keeping up? Good. Zamasu is a Kai who believes that mortals can't be trusted with their own existence.

Upon meeting Zamasu, the first thing Goku obviously does is challenge the unstable being. Upon defeat, Zamasu sets his sights on Goku's body and strength. To that end, he steals Goku's body from another timeline and teams up with his future self for all kinds of destructive mischief.

This form is exactly the same as Super Saiyan Blue,  except for the fact that Zamasu is an actual God, not just a Saiyan who managed to gain access to God Ki. Because of this, instead of Goku Black's hair and aura turning blue, it turns pink.

3 Super Saiyan White

When an evil God who's achieved Super Saiyan Rose fuses with his future evil God self who hasn't, he gets the purest version of Super Saiyan God to ever be bent on universal destruction. Zamasu is, in theory, the only person able to achieve this transformation.

In his Super Saiyan White form, Zamasu maintained his own skin tone and facial features with Goku's build and, more importantly, his hair. However, because he reached a new level of power, and also because Zamasu's hair color is white, the hair in this form is also white.

The idea for this was based on a fan drawing from the late '90s depicting what many believed to be Goku in a Super Saiyan 5 transformation. If you're a fan of white then don't worry, we're going deeper.

2 Ultra Instinct

This form isn't limited to Saiyans, but it's worth mentioning because Goku's version of it is unique. Ultra Instinct is kind of like the Great White Buffalo of techniques: once you achieve it, hold on, because getting it back is no easy feat.

In this form, Goku doesn't even have to think.

He is calm and at perfect harmony with his mind and his muscles. This is an ability Goku has been trying to master since all the way back when he trained with Mr. Popo and Kami in order to defeat Piccolo.

He first used the technique in the Tournament of Power against Jiren, though he was only able to maintain it momentarily. It also manifested against Kefla. In this form Goku looks like himself, though his hair is slightly elevated and his aura appears as a grey bubbly tinge around him.

1 Mastered Ultra Instinct

This is the newest and most powerful form a Saiyan has ever been shown to achieve, and is a fitting way to close out the Dragon Ball Super series. The Tournament of Power is almost over and Goku has just recently been able to master his Ultra Instinct power up.

In this form Goku's hair and eyes are completely grey. His power is level gains a huge boost, though it is extremely damaging to his body. Whis has said that if he maintains the form for too long, his body could literally explode.

The Mastered Ultra Instinct possesses a power level even higher than the Gods of Destruction. Whis and his sister are able to reach this form, as is Jiren, though Beerus is still working towards it. Despite his immense strength increase, this form still doesn't put Goku's power level above Jiren's.

Alternate names

Full-Power Super Saiyan
Mastered Super Saiyan
Super Saiyan
Super Saiyan Fourth Grade
Super Saiyan Grade 4
Super Saiyan beyond Super Saiyan

Super Saiyan Full Power (サイヤフルパワー,Sūpā Saiya-jin Furu Pawā),[2][3] only ever referred to as Super Saiyan (サイヤ,Sūpā Saiya-jin) in-universe, is the mastered state of the ordinary Super Saiyan form, which it replaces once it is attained. The form has alternatively been referred to as Super Saiyan Fourth Grade (フルパワー超サイヤ人第四段階,Sūpā Saiya-jin Dai-Shi Dankai, lit. "Super Saiyan Stage 4")[4] on occasion, and also Super Saiyan beyond Super Saiyan.[5]

The form is no different inherently to the ordinary Super Saiyan. The reduction in the emotional and physical strain of both attaining and maintaining the state mean that the user often appears more relaxed, with eyes and facial features becoming softened and even cheerful. Their aura alters somewhat, radiating energy in a smoother, slower pattern.[2] As it is still essentially the first grade of Super Saiyan, the general traits all remain the same. In the anime, the user's hair is often portrayed as yellowish white, returning to a more yellow-gold tone when the user powers up.

By conditioning themselves to remain transformed for extended periods of time, the Super Saiyan can desensitize themselves to the negative effects of the transformation. Their wild emotions are kept in check allowing them to stay more focused, which results in a more strategic fighting style and pattern of thinking, and passive ki consumption is reduced to negligible amounts. This energy conserving methodology allows them to devote their critical energy to other necessary tasks during combat whilst spending the duration of their time in a relaxed state or simply carrying out normal everyday tasks.

By mastering the transformation, the Super Saiyan is able to retain transformation almost subconsciously, allowing them to transform seemingly indefinitely. In the anime, they are even shown able to sleep in this state peacefully, which is shown to radiate a positive feel to the environment as even wildlife are attracted to them. In requiring less ki to contribute to transform or even maintaining this state itself, the maximum amount of ki can thus be focused into attacks and stamina use, with no adverse effects present. Once this state was mastered, Goku was able to keep up with Perfect Cell, something which Vegeta and Future Trunks could not do in their Super Saiyan Second and Third Grades. Vegeta notes the incredible side effects of the transformation by stating that feeling Goku or Gohan's Super Saiyan Full Power form isn't the same feeling he gets around a normal Super Saiyan.

One of the most notable traits of this state is that unlike an untrained Super Saiyan, which appears to stay at full power at all times, the user is able to freely modify their power level just like in their base state. This means any chosen percentage of the user's maximum power level can be used at any given time, and it can be even suppressed to everyday functioning levels. A downside to this, explored in the anime only, is that with the Saiyan's power instinctively remaining elevated, it can be somewhat difficult to keep it suppressed to levels allowing to carry out day-to-day activities. While Goku and Gohan were drinking orange juice from glasses, they repeatedly broke the glasses from the difficulty of controlling their strength. It was believed that the original Super Saiyan form could not be used in conjunction with the Spirit Bomb, during the Kid Buu Saga, Goku manages to use the mastered transformation after successfully creating and throwing the Super Spirit Bomb.

When a Super Saiyan achieves an extremely high level of power, they will exhibit sparks around their aura (like a Super Saiyan 2), this has only been displayed by Vegito, Goku Black, and Goku (after taking power from Vegeta, Gohan, Goten and Trunks).

In an interview, Akira Toriyama noted that since Super Saiyan 2 and Super Saiyan 3 are simply powered-up versions of Super Saiyan, completely mastering the normal state and the Super Saiyan form would lead Super Saiyan to being stronger than both Super Saiyan 2 and Super Saiyan 3.[6] In Dragon Ball Super, once Goku and Vegeta master the power of Super Saiyan God, they can further evolve their power by utilizing the power of Super Saiyan God in conjunction with Super Saiyan, the result being Super Saiyan Blue.

When transforming into a Super Saiyan in Dragon Ball Super: Broly, Vegeta briefly gains green hair like that of the Legendary Super Saiyan form.

In the Super Dragon Ball Heroes anime, Goku and Vegeta's transformation effect into Super Saiyan is the same as Super Saiyan Blue - though in this case they are enveloped in a golden aura which cracks around them - while Future Trunks is the normal Super Saiyan transformation effect.

It is stated in Dragon Ball Legends that Super Saiyan 2 cannot be achieved unless the Saiyan has already attained Super Saiyan Full Power.

Usage and power

Despite having a different name than the basic Super Saiyan form, this form is no different in terms of transformation; the difference lies in the user is able to remain calm, relaxed, and conserve their energy and stamina. After realizing Super Saiyan Second Grade and Super Saiyan Third Grade consume too much speed and stamina in exchange for power, not to mention the energy consumption of the transformation itself, Goku decided the base Super Saiyan form was best for balancing the three; rather than focus on increasing their power output, Goku and Gohan ceased their training so they can remain in Super Saiyan 24/7, even when they are asleep. As a result, their bodies became accustomed to the Super Saiyan form that they can maintain it effortlessly while living their day to day lives with absolutely no stress on their bodies. When they fight, the stress on their bodies is extremely minimal, allowing them to fight more strategically and longer.

This form draws out the power of the Super Saiyan to it's limits,[7] and becomes able to surpass the previous limits of Super Saiyan power.[5] According to one source this form's power is equal to Super Saiyan Third Grade, but with none of the downsides.[8]

Goku is the one to come up with the idea of mastering the Super Saiyan form into a natural state while in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, stating that they need to get rid of the instability and restless feeling.

While never actually outright stated in the series, other Saiyans appeared to have obtained this mastery later on. Future Trunks had achieved this form by the time he confronted Future Cell.[2] Goten and Trunks both easily attained the Super Saiyan form, and seem to have mastered it at a young age.

When Gohan enrolled for Orange Star High School, he had to deal with some bank robbers. In order to prevent his identity from being discovered, he transformed into a Super Saiyan, earning himself the title of Gold Fighter. On his first day at the high school, he had to deal with another band of robbers, and once again transforming into a Super Saiyan. After hearing his classmates talk about the mysterious Gold Fighter having a resemblance to him (mainly the clothes he wears), he decided using Super Saiyan as a means of disguise is ineffective, and instead opted a new disguise.

Goten and Trunks' fusion form, Gotenks, seen late in Dragon Ball Z, easily gained the ability to transform into a mastered Super Saiyan, as well as Super Saiyan 2 and Super Saiyan 3. Likewise in Dragon Ball Super, Caulifla was able to consciously manifest the Super Saiyan form the first time and likewise remained calm as ever, going on to achieve Super Saiyan 2 in the anime. Cabba also achieved Super Saiyan 2 in the anime, indicating that he mastered Super Saiyan.

This form is used by Goku and Gohan in Dragon Ball Z: Broly - The Legendary Super Saiyan. It continues to appear throughout the other Dragon Ball movies through to Dragon Ball Z: Wrath of the Dragon.

During Great Saiyaman's battle with the Watagash possessed Barry Kahn, Gohan uses Super Saiyan Full Power while wearing his helmeted Great Saiyaman Suit. This state is dubbed by the 2nd Great Saiyaman film director as Super Great Saiyaman. Due to his helmet concealing his hair, only his Super Saiyan aura is visible.

During Goku's battle with Beerus as a Super Saiyan God in the Battle of Gods movie and anime, Goku dropped out of the form, but somehow managed to retain the strength of his Super Saiyan God form in his regular Super Saiyan and base form. Goku used the enhanced power to battle Beerus. Later, Goku trained with Whis and after gaining enough power and further mastering Super Saiyan, his Super Saiyan form evolved into the Super Saiyan Blue form. In Battle of Gods, Gotenks uses the form when he challenges Beerus, but is easily taken out.

During the Universe 6 Saga, Vegeta and Goku's usage of this Super Saiyan form post-Whis training was referred to as "Chou Super Saiyan".[9]

In Dragon Ball Super: Broly, Vegeta transforms into Super Saiyan to easily overwhelm Broly after he had grown enough to pressure him with his winter clothes taken off. However, he gets pressured when Broly begins to grow further. Goku displays considerably greater performance coupled with both his superior power and skill to Vegeta by being able to trade blows with Wrathful Broly whereas Vegeta in his Super Saiyan God form could not do so and even land hits on him before ultimately being pushed back by Broly's growth and forced to change to Super Saiyan God. Gogeta's power in this form was so great he could fight Super Saiyan Broly equally, with their power being enough to break the fabric of reality, and combined with his greater fighting skills, was able to gain the upper hand at times.

In both the Super Dragon Ball Heroes anime and manga, Xeno Goku, Xeno Gohan, Xeno Vegeta, and Xeno Goten have all achieved Super Saiyan Full Power within the Xeno world main timeline (with the form being first achieved within the Xeno main timeline's Android conflict by Xeno Goku and Xeno Gohan as a result of their training in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber), while Xeno Trunks achieved it after the Cell Games using it like his counterpart did to finally kill the Androids and put an end to alternate future timeline's Android conflict.

Video Game Appearances

In all of its game appearances, Super Saiyan Full Power is simply called "Super Saiyan" and is treated as the same form.

In Dragon Ball Legends while training to complete in the Super Cell Games during the Tournament of Time, Shallot is taught this form by post-Cell Games Gohan (Youth) as part of his training to become a Super Saiyan 2. It should be noted that Shallot only achieves the form as part of the story as his "Super Saiyan" transformation represents both Super Saiyan and Super Saiyan Full Power.
